From Sunlight into Shadow  by Allee 2 Review(s)

Knowing what is to come only makes it worse at times. Poor Gilraen, already having to face the fact her son is for the world and not just for her. And she fears becoming her father....

Author Reply: Yes, Gilraen is a character my heart really goes out to. She had such a traumatic loss when she was still so young, and then having to live with her fears over her son--that's a lot do deal with. In my own personal vision of Gilraen, I also imagine her as fearing for her own mental health--wondering whether she'll be able to hold it all together and be the strong mother that she wants to be. Thank you for your comments.

I thought this was a lovely look at Gilraen's feelings. Life must have been so difficult for her, losing her husband and then knowing that Aragorn would have to go out on the same path. No wonder she wanted to pick him up and run away.

He's such an adventurous little boy, so full of life and yet so tough already. We can see in those few short scenes what sort of Man he will become.

There's a wonderful story by Mirkwoodmaiden, and I think it is called either'The Chieftain' or 'The Heir Apparent.' (she changed it and I can't remember which one she finally chose). That looks at Aragorn's youth and how Gilraen had to cope with the changes in her life. If you haven't seen it, it is worth reading.

Thank you for a lovely story.

Author Reply: Thank you for your comments; I'm glad you enjoyed it. Gilraen is, to me, one of Tolkien's most intriguing characters. What life must have been like for her! I always envision her to be a woman who is incredibly strong while being emotionally fragile, and I imagine her somewhat at war with herself over these two poles. From what little we know of Gilraen (and really, isn't it interesting that Tolkien revealed so little about her?), I think that she eventually lost the war over her mind and emotions, sinking into a deep despair from which she never recovered.

Thank you for recommending the story by Mirkwoodmaiden; I will most definitely read it. Sounds really interesting and just the sort of story I love.

Again, thank you!
