I love this so far. I read Merry's Graduation, and liked that as well. I'm a big fan of your stories, and found this one on the MEFA site. When I'm finished with it, I'll leave a review there as well.

I really enjoy your portrayal of Degger; so self-effacing. I like that Merry and Pippin are so kind to him; I also find it believable that Paladin is so kind to Degger, because he himself was once a 'lowly farmer'.

Nice job!

Author Reply: It's late at night (for me, anyway!), so forgive me if I don't make any sense, or there are way more typos than usual, lol.

Your review came as a genuine surprise to me, and most welcome, I might add. :-) I never think of anyone as being "big fans" of my stories. I believe everyone else to be far better writers than myself. I will go ahead and count you among them, although I don't get in nearly as much reading as I used to because I work so much overtime. And that is what gets me down in the dumps; I used to devour Pippin and Merry fanfic like nobody's business, but not for the past year and a half. Fate and Destiny wasn't supposed to take 9 months to write, but that's what happened after the long hours began last year.

I do promise to get out there and catch up a little bit on my reading -- esp. with your tales, but I can't promise *when*. Perhaps the upcoming holidays will be kind to me.

Thank you so much for all of the kind things you have said in your reviews of this story and others. You are a sweet lass! I *really* do appreciate them and tuck them away in my heart for future pick-me-ups. :-)

Degger is a wonderful young Hobbit and probably Took in hiding there. Wonderful lad, Degger.

No question in my mind that there is noble blood in Degger somewhere. This reminded me of Pippin pledging his oath to Denethor or the part of the films where Aragorn kneels before Frodo and says, "You have my sword." I am beginning to think that watch came to Degger's family by honest means. I do wonder if it is his father that Pippin is worried about or something more? I am guessing that Frodo and Merry will get to the heart of that.

Author Reply: The pledge was similar, yes, but more a solemn promise between friends.

Pippin sees more than what people around him thinks he sees. He may be young, but he ain't dumb. I'd say more, but I'm still dealing with that part. ;-)

Thank you so much for reading!

“You’re a terrible liar,” said Frodo, sitting down beside Pippin on the couch.

“So he is,” said Merry, sitting down on the other side of Pippin.

Oh, I love Frodo and Merry here (and Pippin, of course)! They know Pippin better than his father, it seems. On the other hand, Paladin is too much preoccupied with other things. He is afraid of what lies ahead, but he will see it through. He's a Took!
AND he has a protector! Degger is wonderful. Who knows (beside you) what his future will be? I'm looking forward to reading more.

Author Reply: I'm glad you enjoyed that moment--I meant for it to be a special one. :-) Yeah, Paladin wasn't convinced his son was all right in the least, but he was being called back into an important meeting. He knew Frodo and Merry would help out in this instance. ;-)

That is a good question...what is in Degger's future? Hehehehe....I can see it all in my head. :-D

Thank you for reading, and for your gracious review. :-)

With all seriousness, Degger knelt before Pippin, his hand resting upon his friend’s knee. “I promise, Mr. Pippin. He won’t be alone.”

*heavy sigh* The burden comes to Paladin and his family. Bless dear Degger.

I'm so totally loving this story, Pippinfan. Your writing is superb!!

Author Reply: Promises are taken serously, and I think you recall that tale I did earlier this year. ;-)

Yes, it has. Now we'll see what Paladin--and Pippin are truly made of. :-)

I am so happy you're enjoying this tale! You know how much I look forward to your responses, mentor. :-) If anything is superb, I've been taught by the best. :-)

Thank you so much for reading! Now off to work I go...(gag).

A stroke. That was pretty much what I expected. Poor Ferumbras--a tough fate for anyone, even a selfish old goat like him.

Paladin's got to be torn--he doesn't want this job any more than he ever did, yet he also knows his duty, and he's no slacker. Poor Pippin, stuck with knowing his own fate as Thain's heir is looming over him, as well as worry for his father. Yet Frodo and Merry are there for Pippin--and Frodo will be there for Paladin as well, for he's an adult and a master in his own right, now. Hopefully these things can reassure Pippin somewhat.

But how will all this affect Degger's future? For I'm not forgetting the mysterious watch...

Author Reply: Yep, you're on the money--on both accounts. For as much as Ferumbras had his day coming, I do plan on portraying both sides of the issue. His "old goat" ways, and how his illness will affect him and those around him.

Again, you have the right of it about Paladin and Pippin. You've done such a fantastic job of portraying that Pippin doesn't want anything to do with the Titles for certain reasons, but I thought, what other reason would he *not* want the Titles? All those stories about Bandobras and the Fell Winter are coming to life to the young laddie. You may have touched on those reasons as well, I just didn't pick up on it. LOL, I *meant* to put something in there about that--and how much support Frodo and Merry are willing to give their young cousin, but it was getting late and my swiss cheese brain became even holier (not religously!). I think I can still squeeze that in there in an upcoming chapter. ;-)

LOL, yes, don't forget that mysterious watch. It will show up again. That last moment between Degger and Pippin...that was actually a lead-in of sorts to something that will happen futuristically to Degger. It came in the form of a challenge tale early this year. ;-) Just food for thought. :-)

Thank you so much for reading!
