The Journey Doesn't End Here  by Antane 2 Review(s)

Because such a well-crafted story should have more than one review :>

I agree with you that it is implausible that Sam could have taken the Ring from him, no matter how gently, in that moment. But I think that the rest of the story worked very well. Since they were going to die anyway, it might have been better if they simply jumped, holding hands.

Author Reply: Thank you very much! I did originally have them holding onto each other and falling in together but being rescued by Iluvatar before they actually hit the lava (their bodies hit the fire, but their souls had already been whisked away) but when I read it to my family, my mom thought it was a double suicide so I changed it. I still love my implausible section though. :)

I'm convinced now; I am *never* going to be able to read fics in which Frodo dies in Middle-earth without crying my heart out.

This is gentle, and I suppose Frodo was spared this way, but oh so heartbreaking!

I like this:

When we reach the edge and you are ready to jump, I say one simple word. “No.”

You stop and look at me. There is now a desperate pleading in your eyes, a frantic hope that there is another way. I don’t stop looking into your eyes and
reach to your other hand where you hold the Ring. Slowly, gently I begin to unclench your fingers. There is anger, confusion, a threat perceived, in your
eyes, but more than anything there is trust. I don’t look away from you as I continue to open your hand. Your fingers almost close around mine, around
the Ring, but so slowly they loosen again and I touch that despicable thing myself. Fear flares in your eyes, but there is still trust. I don’t dare look
away from you, don’t dare speak, barely dare to breathe. You don’t look away either, even as the Ring pulls at you. Then your hand is open and I am able
to release you from your burden. I can’t say how. I just know it falls into the fire.

If only it could have happened that way--without Frodo and Sam dying. Very original and bittersweet.
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Hannon le, my dearest! I've been looking all day for a review from *anyone* and now just when I'm thinking it will be nothing yet, here is yours! I know it's not very plausible but I like the idea of the force of Sam's love being able to overcome that terrible addiction to the Ring. Gandalf said Frodo's mind would be broken if the Ring was taken him by force, but this was a gentle, loving release.

Namarie, God bless, Mil le, Antane :)
