Ooo, foreshadowing......I love things about Primula. I think it's rather interesting, myself. And, of course, I LOVE the title.

Hi. I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with for Frodo's childhood.

To clarify a bit about terminology (I hope this is intelligible):

Bilbo and Drogo had the same great-grandparents (Balbo was their mutual great-grandfather, not great-great-grandfather; their grandfathers were brothers, and Balbo was the father of their grandfathers). Since their fathers had the same grandparents, their fathers were first cousins. Therefore Bilbo and Drogo were second cousins. [And if Bilbo had had children, they would have been Frodo's third cousins.]

Frodo is one generation away from Drogo, therefore Bilbo and Frodo are second cousins once removed (i.e. one *generation* removed or one generation away from being simple first cousins) on the Baggins side.

Bilbo and Primula were first cousins on the Took side. Their mothers were sisters. They had the same grandparents. Therefore Bilbo and Frodo are first cousins once removed on the Took side.

Frodo and Merry are also first cousins once removed. Frodo's grandfather, Gorbadoc Took, was Merry's great-grandfather. Merry's father is Frodo's first cousin.

Frodo and Pippin are second cousins once removed. Frodo's great-grandfather, The Old Took, was Pippin's great-great-grandfather. [Also Merry's great-great-grandfather, so Frodo and Merry are also second cousins once removed.] The Old Took was also Bilbo's grandfather, making Bilbo first cousin twice removed to both Pippin and Merry.]

Merry and Estella are third cousins. Their grandfathers were first cousins, so Merry's father and Estella's mother were second cousins, and Merry and Estella are third cousins.

I hope you are joking about "incest." None of this is incest. Marriages between first cousins are frowned on in some places, but legal in most of the U.S.

There is nothing on the family trees we have which indicates that Drogo and Primula were related to each other (although, upper class hobbit society being what it was, I assume they were probably some sort of distant cousins). The fact that they had a cousin in common (Bilbo) does not make them related to each other in any way; "related by marriage" might or might not apply, I'm not certain. Have you ever met any of the cousins of your cousins? Do you consider yourself related to them?

Author Reply: Yep, I was joking, my 16-year-old self (as I probably was when I wrote the story) liked that sort of joke... now I have to roll my eyes at my younger self. Thank you for the clarification nonetheless... i'veactually never met /any/ of my cousins so genealogy is not a strong point pf mine.
