Consequences of a Fall  by Dreamflower 11 Review(s)
Indigo BuntingReviewed Chapter: 1 on 7/13/2006
An interesting beginning, Dreamflower! I'm not typically the biggest fan of hobbit stories, but the summary on this one caught my eye. The introduction makes it pretty plain that this Hyacinth is bad news. Poor Pearl, having to watch someone fall down the stairs - and die - and then be blamed for it. I'm very curious as to what happens next. Oh, and I must mention this before I go on: Pippin's feelings of guilt because someone who he didn't like died feel spot-on to me. His parents must be raising him well. Great job!

Author Reply: Well, hello, dear! I'm so glad you were interested enough in this to give it a try. I must confess, I seldom read anything *but* hobbits, although I am trying to stretch myself a bit.

Yes, Hyacinth is very bad news. She is a most unnatural hobbit!

There are any number of takes on Lalia's fall, and Pearl's role in it. We really get so few details to go by. I wish JRRT had actually done a story about it himself, instead of just an anecdote in a letter!

Pippin is a sweet and sensitive child, and not liking someone is rather alien to him--he prefers to like everyone, and for everyone to like him. Sadly, that this can't always be so is a hard lesson for him to come by.

Onward!

Author Reply: So glad you are liking it!

Getting caught up. To see such an accident must have been horrible. And of course the gossip would make it as nasty as possible.

Poor Pearl. Poor Pippin. At least they have Frodo to look forward to seeing.

Author Reply: Yes, they will be very glad to see Frodo, although things may not go quite as they are expecting.

And yes, the gossip was nasty indeed!

I meant to review this when you first posted it, but RL got in the way, as usual! I so looking forward to this tale as I've always been fascinated by the backstory of Lalia's demise and poor Pearl being accused. And you've brough Horrible Hyacinth into it too! She's rather like Lobelia - is she a Bracegirdle?

Can't wait for the next chapter - great beginning!

Author Reply: Hyacinth is a Brockhouse, but though I've not brought it into the story itself, in my mental backstory there is a Bracegirdle connection for both her and Lalia.

I will post each chapter as soon as it's finished with beta. The story is actually complete.

A Horrid Hyacinth story! Oh good, I'm sitting back in anticipation.

I bet I know just who would try to harm an innocent tween's reputation like that. And why. It took a long time for the comeuppance to arrive, but poetic justice turns up in its own time.

Looking forward to more.

Author Reply: Oh, you have a lot to anticipate--Hyacinth reveals to the readers just *how* evil she really is--even though the other characters have a few more years to understand her duplicity.

Evil!Hyacinth is fun to write...

I am so glad this is being posted here. I find it so much easier to read and comment in this format than over on Pippinhealers. I thought Pippin's worry over not liking Lalia was very accurate. You do feel a bit guilty when someone you've never cared for dies. I also liked the fact that Paladin sent the children inside before bringing up the unpleasant details. They would have to know but not the minute they arrived.

Author Reply: Hi GW! Yes, it is a bit easier. But I had fun posting it over there too; it kind of livened things up a bit.

Pippin, especially would feel like that--he always wants to like people, and when he doesn't he feels guilty anyway; her dying made him feel even worse. And, yes, Paladin would want to speak to the adults before they said anything to the children.

A very interesting first chapter. I feel sorry for Pearl, and poor wee Pippin as well. I'll be looking forward to your next chapter.

Author Reply: I hope that the story will continue to hold your interest; I had a good time writing it...

Nice..very nice...now you got me curious... Pippin is upset that he didn't like Lalia, she wasn't a nice either, couldn't blame him...and Merry, is more into waiting for frodo to come, very cute....
I wonder who put those rumors about poor Pearl.

And Hyacinth, deserves what she got, never liked her...

Please continue,soon...

Author Reply: Well, I am afraid Hyacinth is not a very likeable person...

The next chapter will be up as soon as the beta is complete.

Who indeed? I think I already know the answer to that one, but we'll see. I'm interested to see your take on this story. I love Pippin's guilt for not liking Laliah and the mention of how hard he tried to like Reggie's daughters. He feels he should like everyone. I also liked Merry's complete lack of guilt and that he was just looking forward to seeing Frodo again. He always sees the silver lining, doesn't he? ;)

Author Reply: Well, naturally you do. *grin*

Pippin always thinks he should like everyone, so naturally he feels badly when he does not, poor child. Merry, on the other hand has no such compunctions. If people are not likeable, well, then he doesn't like them--it's their loss for being so disagreeable, LOL!

Oh no, this doesn't sound good. The jewelry and their mother look to be involved, and that's ominous in itself. And poor Pearl! I don't exactly feel sorry for Lalia, but why on earth would anyone not set the brake properly on a chair just because she was overbearing and sharp-tongued? I'm really excited to see where this is going!
God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: Yes, you will indeed find the jewelry and their wicked mother involved. And you will learn more of the accident as the story progresses...
