What a wonderful letter! Very good.

(Of course, obviously I had forgotten about that last quote, about no one walking in Imladris... may have to re-think my timeline..... ;-D)

Author Reply: Lol! I had to re-think mine too – hence the fic!

Hi Ithildin!

I enjoyed these very much, but especially the last one... I too, have wondered when Celeborn sailed, and whether he took Elladan and Elrohir with him. I conjectured that he sailed after Arwen died, but did indeed take E&E... it would break my heart if they just faded away! I, too, believe that the world of men would no longer heed the Elves as the generations passed.

Very nice work, thank you!

Author Reply: Hi Barbara!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the stories. And, I’m with you on believing Elladan and Elrohir sailed – I couldn’t bear the alternative either! Thanks for the review!

I like the letter, but the quotes were just as interesting.

Taken literally, the second quote might indicate that both Rivendell and Lorien were bereft of elven-kind when Aragorn and Arwen passed away. The first quote is pretty clear that not all the elves, but the High Elves for sure, have departed from our world. Nice choices.

I like that you see Celeborn having good reasons for saying with his people in East Lorien. Most people don't get that, imho.

Author Reply: Yes, a literal interpretation does make an intriguing argument for Rivendell being abandoned before Aragorn’s death. Taken alone it may not be enough to constitute proof that Tolkien intended it to mean exactly that, but it’s what this fic was based on.

And, yes, I think several factors played into Celeborn’s decision to stay when Galadriel left; a key one being the responsibility to get his people off to a good start in their new home. Clearly he stayed on beyond that need since he went to Rivendell for a time. I think reasons included Arwen/Aragorn and, even more so, the twins, as well as his own reluctance to leave Middle-earth.

Thanks for reading and reviewing!

This is a lovely collection of ficlets. My favourite is the Thranduil/Legolas one (of course!) - I like the way they each face battle, and take time in the midst of that to wonder how the other fares. I've always liked the part just after Helm's Deep, where Legolas looks north and knows that war has already come there.

My only gripe with Celeborn's letter to Arwen is that I believe Elladan and Elrohir stayed in M-E until Aragorn and Arwen died, then they sailed with their grandfather. But that's just me. Nice work.

Author Reply: Thank you, Jay. Yes, I always liked that passage about Legolas looking north and speaking of his home too. It’s one of the few insights Tolkien gives us into the Elf’s emotions.

And as to the timing of Celeborn’s (and the twins’!) departure – I guess I tend to take things literally and the quote from Appendix A seems to make a strong case. However – I wouldn’t go so far as to call it proof. That fact alone gives us enough wiggle-room for another interpretation. To believe they stayed for Aragorn and Arwen is certainly a good one!

I'm happy you enjoyed the stories!

A fleeting moment of concern and yearning nicely captured.

Author Reply: It was a fleeting moment; they didn’t either one have much time for reflection under the circumstances. Thank you for reading and reviewing, Redheredh!

You make good use of an interesting object which, with its preserving and healing powers, presaged the Three rings. Great descriptions! I like part 3 the most.

Author Reply: Yes, the Elessar and its history is fascinating. I enjoyed writing this and I’m so glad you liked it!

This is the kind of situation Tolkien creates and then leaves understated for us fanfic writers to tease out. Legolas did seem to be able to sense war coming upon his father's people, so this seems reasonable to me.

Author Reply: Ah, those dangling threads, those ‘what ifs’, those roads ‘less traveled by’… that’s what makes Tolkien’s world so much fun to play in! I was amazed when I realized that the two battles took place on the same date. I’m glad the concept seems plausible to you. Thanks so much, Daw, for reading and reviewing!
