Of Visions and Bad Dreams  by Garnet Took 4 Review(s)
LindeleaReviewed Chapter: Prologue on 11/14/2005
but with that one, you never know
(You say so much in so few words!)

. He has had premonitions before, or so I believe.
(ooo, are there more stories of Pippin's premonitions?)

There are circumstances surrounding his birth, and other things that you do not yet know about.
(More fuel for the fire... I am burning to know more!)

I have been waiting to speak to him on these matters because I don’t want him to think of himself as anything more than he is
(Perhaps wise. We wouldn't want him to get a swelled head or anything. Soon enough people will be bowing to him and calling him "Prince", anyhow.)

Together they straightened Pippin’s bedroll, and Merry helped him settle into it. Then he got his own blankets and settled next to his cousin.
(I like this picture of protective Merry.)

"though there is no way that one child can replace another. Pim is expecting, and they have agreed that if the babe is a lad, they will name him after his uncle. At least his name will live on.” A single tear escaped to slide silently down Eglantine’s cheek.
(I felt an ache in my throat, reading this. Very poignant.)

It was sealed in red wax with the stamp of the Sackville-Bagginses.
(How chilling! But surely you cannot stop there! More, please? This reads like the beginning to a longer story, and a very promising beginning, too!)

Author Reply: Thank you.

Actually, there was a long story that I had been working on for several months about Pippin and his "gifts", but when my computer died on Halloween night, it took the entire story,20+ pages, with it. It also took another story that I was just about ready to upload, too. I shed quite a few tears over them. Pippinfan has been encouraging me to try to reconstruct them, and I'm starting to work on it.

I may do something more with this story itself some day. It may actually fit into the longer piece somewhere. Right now, the only other story actually available to read that even touches on this is "Victories Won" which talks about Pippin's birth and Gandalf's foretelling about this child's life.

You may have just tempted my muses with the bate they needed to get back to putting those lost stories back onto a new hard-drive.:)

Thanks.

This is very intriguing! I don't remember coming across it at the Challenge site--that's awful of me!

I like stories in which the hobbits have premonitions; this one of yours just cries for a follow-up. I'd love to see a few more chapters, perhaps another dream, that convinces Aragorn Pippin *is* right, and a follow-up to what's happening in the Shire. You could easily make this into a four or five chapter fic...

Enjoyment is not the right word for this Garnet but I am glad to read it again and have a chance to review which I find hard to do over at Marigold's site. You do have some formatting difficulties with this which make it a bit harder to read but it doesn't spoil the enjoyment.

Author Reply: Thanks for letting me know about the formatting. It looked okay in preview, but my luck says that just because the preview was fine doesn't mean the post is.

You're right, this is a rather dark story. Those were bad times, and not just for those on the Quest.

Thanks for the review.

Yes, definitely a premonition of the evil already taking place in the Shire.

Author Reply: Yep, it sure is. I was really far into a story that dealt with Pippin's ability to "sense" things, but my old computer fried it's harddrive; so now I'm gonna have to start it over from the beginning. This piece was only meant as a taste of things to come.

Glad you liked it.
