Boats to Build  by Nancy Brooke 4 Review(s)

This is wonderful, NB! Boromir is young and has the certainty of youth about his opinions: He never would have, if he were Prince; he wouldn’t, when he was Steward. and Somewhere, somewhere in all this nothing, his Grandfather was hiding like a hermit crab. I liked him here.

But I loved Adrahil! I absolutely loved him. He taught Boromir some important lessons in this conversation sitting near the boat. Earning respect of hard-working people, appreciating what it feels like to create something, and letting go when the time comes. All very Tolkien themes and I love how you have couched them here. That was a wonderful conversation.

I really loved this.

Lovely song.

As much detail as Tolkien gave us, isn't it glorious that there are still so many unknowns to allow this type of play? Twisting the facts just a bit doesn't hurt when most everyhting else is kept true.

I love the idea of Adrahil taking charge of his 'retirement' with such gusto. Boromir resisting seems so true of a lad his age, and especially of his temperment. Even though I think Boromir would have a playful side, at fourteen he is probably just being thrown into the education of his future responsibilities, and etiquette would surely be somewhere near the top of those lessons, keeping the tendency for indignation of the opposite at the forefront of his mind. Thanks for sharing :)

This is a lovely picture about someone we seldom read about. You've made both the characters and the setting very real. I find Adrahil and Boromir to be very likable. You've given good insight into the elder years of these rulers, with both respect and humor.
I like the words to the song in your Author's Notes. I hope someday to hear the song itself.
Congratulations on this lovely story. And congratulations to your father for his great accomplishments. It's obvious that you treasure him.

Blessings,
Mum
