Love Letters  by Citrine 10 Review(s)

I had an idle moment, and I'm very glad I chose to spend it reading this story. Bilbo is very real, from his speech patterns to the deeper thoughts that he doesn't often mention but must be having. I also appreciated your exploration of class differences in the Shire. I have no particular urge to kick the Gaffer in the shins, for I can well understand why he would have wanted Sam to give the penny back (my parents did something similar to me once). It's eminently logical, given the social position of the Gamgees relative to the Bagginses.

Author Reply: Thank you for that, I did really hope I could make Bilbo sound right. I'm afraid my intense childhood dislike of the Gaffer was peeking through there. What a hard-barked old coot he seemed, always so rough on poor Sam, and yet now as an adult I can almost see where he was coming from. He was just really trying, in his own way, to keep Sam safe, safe in the mold he was born in. Daydreams of Elves and poetry doesn't get those 'taters dug. But my inner-eleven-year-old still wants to kick him.

What a wonderful story! The two meanings of the word "letters" linked together on a day in Bilbo's life. Bilbo loves both, Frodo and Sam dearly. And the "distraction" with Sam and the penny surely helped to write the perfect letter to Frodo.

This is very sweet...Poor Sam was very upset at giving the penny back but got a slate and will learn to read and write....Nice job

This was such a perfectly written story - Bilbo pottering about and enjoying his batchelor meal, poor Sam being so upset, and then the joy as he realises he is learning his letters. I loved Bilbo's kindness to the little lad, and the beautiful letter he wrote to Frodo.

I love all things hobbity! Hope to read more soon.

Encore!! Encore!! This just begs to have a sequel written of perhaps Bilbo arriving with pockets stuffed with toffees to see Frodo. A lovely little story and you have the characterization of Bilbo down pat. I liked the concept of Sam's letters being a birthday gift to him, and one that is non-refundable at that. Please continue this!

Author Reply: Weeeeell, never say 'never;o) I think there might possibly be another plotbunny wiggling in the hutch. We'll see what happens:o)

Wonderful. Perfect.

Bilbo's bachelor-reader-hobbit meal. And lifting Sam up onto the kitchen chair so he couldn't politely turn down Bilbo's offer of food. Then Sam for once able to eat his fill without his older siblings hogging it all, and ending up stuffed as full as a Yuletide goose. And Bilbo's so-Bilboish letter to Frodo. How Frodo would have loved receiving it!

Oh, this was wonderful! I love how Bilbo was all crotchety at first, but then softened up with poor Sam. I also love the letter to Frodo. To me, it sounds exactly the sort of letter Bilbo would have written. Wonderful!

Oh how wonderful! An absolutely delightful story! Everything was great, but the ending was beyond charming. I'm looking forward to reading more of the same ilk. You've mixed canon with your own creative gifts beautifully. Well done!

Ah, I love the old Hobbit and his desire to do well by all. Am not quite willng to kick Hamfast in the ankle, but I might think of tripping him up at the Green Dragon when he goes to fetch the next round!

Adorable! I loved Bilbo's instant realization of what he had done wrong, and the way he set about righting it. And the interruption helped him to get his thoughts in order. I loved the letter to Frodo he ended up with, so very sweet and affectionate, a true letter of love.
