Yes, a thin line indeed. But the emotions can lead to actions that are worlds apart.

Author Reply: I think Denethor was capable of going both ways, and his tragedy is that he went the way he did.

Oh, what a different interpretation of Denethor's jealousy! Most have him jealous because he suspects who "Thorongil" is, or because he fears Finduilas will be attracted to him, or because he thinks his father likes the stranger better.

But that he would envy him because *he's* stuck in the city, while Thorongil gets to go out and do feats of derrring-do...well, let's just say, that quite sounds like the father of Boromir.

Author Reply: Hi, Dreamflower

I'm very pleased that you have been reading my short fics, and thanks so much for all your comments.

Regarding "A Thin Line Between Love and Hate," my goal was to show that Denethor felt genuinely conflicted about Aragorn. My take on it is that his "jealousy" comes from Aragorn's general excellence AS WELL as Denethor finding out about his true identity. I didn't mean to imply that he was jealous of Thorongil's military successes. Rather, I think that Denethor had his own share of such successes, and that as the Steward's Heir he valued a capable servant like Thorongil. What he didn't like was the "upstart" who might take his seat of power.

However, he has genuine respect and admiration for Aragorn's abilities as well as for the House of Elendil. Thus the conflict.

I've often felt that Thorongil and Denethor would make great slash partners-er-have felt an urge to friendship-that probably twisted quickly to jealousy on Denethor's part. They had a lot in common, and I don't mean Ecthelion's paternal affection.

Author Reply: I agree. Showing that is exactly one of the goals of this drabble. The challenge was--do it in 100 words!!

Interesting relationship, anyway.

Thanks for reading.
