| i realize that the imphasise was on gaffer and hamson, but i like how you work the others feelings into the weave and make it so rich and textured. Author Reply: This was a first parting for all of them, after Bell, and so emotions were rather higher than they would have been had Bell still been with them. They all had their own emotions to go through; it was important they all have their moment to say good-bye. | |

| Poor little Sam worrying that his older brother was gone like him mother way. I did like the way the Gaffer made it easier for Hamson to go. Another wonderful story. You do such a great job with all of the Gamgee family! Author Reply: This isn’t the first time Hamson’s left home for a visit to Tighfield, but Sam senses that this time is different, and Bell’s death is still quite fresh on his mind. He would mistake this for ‘disappearing’ – but be assured the Gaffer has a plan for that. ;) Gaffer may have wanted to blubber and sob, but that isn’t his way and he knew it would only make the parting harder. He sent his son off with everything he needed to make a new life for himself, along with a memento of his mother, instead – much more practical and proper. | |

| Ah! The voice is perfect for all of them, and love the interaction between Hamson and his father and siblings. They are such a wonderful family! Author Reply: They might have prolonged the good-byes all morning if they could have, but practical things such as getting to your destination before sundown wouldn’t allow it. Hamson is taking his family’s love with him and his family will have to adjust to life with one less family member again. | |

| Aww...what a sweet story! Hamson going off to his apprenticeship, the first of the kids to leave the nest. I loved the way the Gaffer sent him off, just enough briskness to let Hamson know "this is the natural way of things" and just enough sentimentality to let him know he'll be missed. The banter of the siblings was adorable too. Little Sam was so brave! Lovely story, GF! Thank you for sharing! Author Reply: Thank you DF! The Gaffer did what was necessary and practical, but that doesn’t make it any easier. He certainly couldn’t let his firstborn go away without one last hug – or two or three. ;) And a parting gift, that will see him through his apprenticeship and into his own mastery. Sam is learning early to put on a brave face, and they all show their hobbit-ability to make light of things. | |
