I think Finarfin was remarkably brave to take a step back at this point and refuse to follow Feanor. It would have taken more courage and conviction than going on. And he lost all his children to exile and all his sons to death. Yet more First Age tragedy.

Morgoth's teeth, but the Silmarillion is filled with a wide range of tragedies. Poor Elwing. Poor Elros and Elrond. Even, with a stretch of the imagination, poor Maglor and Maedhros.

I'll bet everyone was glad when the First Age came to an end.
