The Sea-flute  by Eruanna 9 Review(s)

Dear Eruanna,

I just read your lovely story.

I am curious to know what legend was sparked by Frodo's music. I couldn't figure it out.

The Elves may have thought that Heru Ulmo would disdain Frodo's gifts, but I don't think he would. After all, even when the Noldor were under the Ban, he still went to Middle-earth and gave help and counsel, even to Men.

Thank you for another beautiful tale.

Alassiel

Author Reply: Hullo Alassiel! I know you don't usually review on here, so I'm very honored!

Actually, I didn't have a specific legend in mind so much as an image which has always been particularly haunting to me. I've seen it in several world mythologies, especially in Welsh and English legends: that hauntingly beautiful image of the mysterious, lonely piper who wanders on the shore at night, playing his wild, mournful, and heart-rending melodies to the sea, and the echo of the melody that stays in the hearts of his listeners. I know it's echoed in my heart for a long time, and I think, once, I may have heard him.

I certainly agree with all you say about Ulmo: he seems to me both among the greatest and the humblest of the Valar.

Thank you again for such a kind and warm review!

Many blessings,
Eruanna

I just loved this Eruanna. The tone that you set was rightly solemn and slightly formal. Very much in keeping with place and subject. I would love to know how the music changed when Sam arrived - more joyous and complete perhaps? I also found your picture of Elrond very believable. I like fics that include and expand on his character. Thank you

Author Reply: Hum, you set an interesting puzzle. :) I may have to examine the way the music changes with Sam's arrival. Thanks for the suggestion! And I'm very glad you like the portrayal of Elrond: he's always been one of my favorite characters, and very intriguing to me, but for some reason I find him more difficult to write. So I'm glad he came off well in this! :) Thank you so much for the wonderful review!

Blessings,
Eruanna

And a fitting end to the flute, following the passing of Frodo from the bounds of Arda.

Author Reply: I'm glad you think so! :) I know it's a little short, but I couldn't just leave it completely dangling. And I don't think even the shores of Aman could ever quite forget Frodo...

How beautiful an image and the beginning of a legend.

Author Reply: Thank you so much! This was another of those dream-legends that just sort of came to me, and seemed to fit Frodo. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Oh my, what an utterly beautiful story! I was going to highlight my favorite parts, but I'd end up copying the whole thing here. I try to sprinkle many of my own stories with the Song and the Great Music, and am even working on something now. It's wonderful to find tales like this. What a joy; you have a true Gift.

Author Reply: Thank you so much! I've always loved and admired your stories, especially those which involve the Music, and I can't wait to see what you're working on now. :D I'm really glad you enjoyed this, and thank you again for the lovely review!

Blessings,

Author Reply: Oh gosh. You're going to kill me with these reviews of yours! But that's okay, I don't mind. ;) You're the one who's multi-talented, though: I would be more than honored if this sparked an artwork of any kind. :D

Thanks so much for all of your support and encouragement!

Such a simple story, yet so breathtaking. I was impressed with the romanticism, and the sheer wonder of the story. Well done.

Author Reply: Wow, thank you! *blushes* I don't quite know what to say to that. I have this recurring image of a piper by the sea, and I can hear the sound of the pipes, sort of mournful and wild and beautiful all at once, and it's haunted me for a while. And one day, that image just sort of resolved itself into Frodo, playing his music beside the sea. I'm glad the feeling of wonder and romanticism that that image has always invoked in me came through in this story. And thank you so much for the lovely review!

Blessings,
Eruanna
