Oh, how cute! ;D

Author Reply: This is the first and only time I have responded to a ‘challenge’, though I must admit it was fun writing Bilbo and Lindir.

Thank you for the review, Coriel.

This is such a lovely story - rather bittersweet when you think of Bilbo aging far from home and longing for just a taste of something familiar. Then you added his friend, Lindir, who seemed willing to go great lengths to comfort his hobbit friend (tho' he wasn't quite sure he understood the why's of things from Bilbo's viewpoint). Bilbo seemed a great favorite among the elves of Imladris -even the kitchen staff, who were only to willing to let him make his cake! (I also loved the way Frodo was informed, in a round-about way, of his Uncle's location!) Just a wonderful story - and the recipe sounds delicious! Must try it as soon as possible!

Author Reply: Long-time hearth and home are difficult to leave, but at least he had friends who cared. Elves and hobbits had widely differing views of life, but the novelty of this unpredictable guest with the oddest of manners and strange habits surely was a source of merriment and wonder to the elves. (For certain I envy Bilbo his extended stay in Imladris!)

Thank you for your review, lwarren.

what a darling story, Eruanneth! Perfectly depicted characters, good food, and good friends! :) I'm gonna have to try that recipe.. it looks WONDERFUL. :)

Author Reply: As this is my first attempt to write ‘hobbits’, I find you words a welcome affirmation. At times we need to go beyond our comfort zone into the unknown.

Thank you for your review, Daynawayna.

Oh, yes, the longing for food from home. It's such a basic pleasure, and you don't realize how much you like local food until you've lived in a foreign country for a while. The Elves were very sweet to schlep all the way to the Shire and bring back Bilbo's ingredients. I do hope they brought enough so that he can bake a few more seed cakes.

You also seem to have captured one of the issues of aging -- of no longer having the opportunity to do for oneself. Imladris seems to have been Bilbo's version of an assisted living home. Though he enjoyed his retirement and the chance to do nothing but write poetry, he must have missed having a place of his very own sometimes.

And what a wonderfully sneaky way to let Frodo know where Bilbo was and that he was doing well. The whole seed cake adventure seems to have turned out well for everyone.

Perhaps I will have to try baking that seed cake. I'd have to go get buttermilk, more eggs, and caraway seeds, so it might have to wait till Market Day. But what a nice end-of-semester treat, to have Bag End Seed Cake.

Author Reply: I also have spent some time in a foreign country and while the food and customs were novel and/or delicious the yearning for the familiar fare and plain comforts of home were never far off.

You had me laughing as I imagined the brochure Imladris might publish on the advantages of their assisted care facilities. Not that I would utter the first objection to spending my waning days in the company of elves; quite the opposite in truth.

Hopefully you enjoy the cake as much as the story, though the quality of the ingredients may differ from those of the Shire.

Thank you for your review, French Pony.

Oh, I'm so glad you posted this here! I loved this. (I've tried the recipe, by the way--yummm!! 8-D )

Author Reply: Perhaps I should also thank you, as it was in response to your recipe challenge that I was inspired to write about this event. Yes, it is a quite tasty and unusual cake.

Thank you for your review, Dreamflower.

This is indeed 'sweet'! I love imagining that the Elves felt such fondness and respect for Bilbo, and that Frodo was part of a conspiracy to help his dear uncle feel happier in Rivendell. I wonder if they discussed it when Frodo saw him again?

:D

Author Reply: So glad you liked this tale. It was such fun to write and I feel certain the elves did feel a great deal of kindness toward the old hobbit. Surely it would have been a topic of discussion between Bilbo and Frodo as food was always a favorite subject among hobbits.

Thank you for your review, shirebound.
