A Journey Of Discovery  by Jay of Lasgalen 57 Review(s)

*happy sigh* Yes, I realize I'm dreadfully late, but I absolutely loved this one. It's probably my favorite out of your fics (but then again, that's probably because I absolutely love dogs to death). FANTABULOUS, and you continue to be my favorite author (well, ok, there's Cassia and Sio, but seriously). I loved that they got to have the puppies. So sweet! Wonderful, Jay!

Author Reply: Don't worry - I love late reviews! They're like an unexpected gift. I like dogs as well (I have an Irish Setter). I hated ill-treating poor Draug, but it was a great way to show Elrohir's discovery of his healing skills, and of course he was rewarded by having one of the puppies eventually.

Thanks for reviewing!

Oh, great ending!

I was wondering what would happen when they encountered Will. It may have been awkward but I was relieved they were all fairly civil. Elladan was very restrained, considering that even I could feel his hostility!

Whew, Garm is still alive – and has been busy too, it would seem! Puppies! Wasn’t that so nice of Appleton? I really enjoyed watching him with the twins. It really seemed to give him pleasure to make them happy. And I just melted when Elladan and Elrohir realise that they can’t split up the two puppies and refuse to take just one. They’d certainly understand that. Any parents would be proud of them.

I’m so glad things have worked out for Will. It’s interesting that he seemed the worst off but has really turned his life around by finding something he’s good at and rising to responsibility, whereas Bob appeared to be a better person in the first place but is going nowhere. It sounds like his biggest problem is that mother of his. Grrr.

And yay, they get to keep the puppies! I love the names. And the image of them in the baskets is just adorable. It sounds like it’s been a rewarding trip all round, adventures and misadventures and all! I’m sorry to see this end but no doubt you have plenty more stories for us yet :-)

Author Reply: Elladan is very protective of his brother, and would be far more resentful of Will than Elrohir is, I think. Will won't ever be a truly 'nice' person, but he's come a very long way from what he was. Bob hasn't even done that :(

I was going to have the twins choose which puppy they wanted - but suddenly realised that they'd never part the two. It had to be both or neither.

Thanks for reviewing, Dot - and yes, there are several more ideas brewing. Wait and see.

I think I smiled the whole way through this chapter!

Great job showing the passing of time. I was wondering whether or not we’d get to see Mithlond. “There could be a big settlement here one day - a whole country!” Methinks Ilmarin could be on to something there…

There’s something quite startling about elves finding fossils! I just knew that knife was going to break. Silly elf. I love the fact that Ilmarin and Elrond’s reactions were exactly the same! And I’m blaming you if I start using “Balrog’s balls” in everyday conversation ;-)

I’m endlessly fascinated by the topic of healing. I actually particularly like the way Elrond’s eyes lose focus and he seems to become part of Elrohir, exploring the wound from inside his son. I also really like the way he can sense Elrohir immediately when he tries to see what’s happening. Of course, it’s a marvellous way of exploring the question of healers healing themselves. I’m learning just as much as the twins here! Elrond’s explanation makes perfect sense.

Dan certainly takes after his father! I love the easy manner they have with the elves. I get the impression that they’re like that with anyone, no matter where they’re from, as long as they’re decent people. What a great way to be.

“If the twins would prefer to be with Lord Elrond,” he began, “we do not mind if you share our room, my lady – do we, Ilmarin?” That made me choke on my tea!! You’re so good at writing humour and this chapter is just full of it. It’s great too to see the relaxed relationship they all have with each other now. And poor Ilmarin was propositioned! His reaction is just hysterical. The elves may tease one another about such things but to actually do it is just scandalous! I know I should feel sad that this is Will’s mother but I’m afraid I’m too busy laughing…

And it’s Will! On to the next chapter… :-)

Author Reply: I had to keep reminding myself that there weren't any Hobbits in Bree at this time - it was long before they arrived and colonised the Shire.

The accident with the knife had the dual purpose of allowing Elrond and Elrohir to discuss healing again - I'd wondered myself about healers healing themselves, and wanted to see what Elrond would say about it. Also, it gave the twins a reason to go to the forge and meet Will again. I'm so glad you like 'Balrog's balls' - I'd love to hear someone say it!!

I think Barliman Butterbur is the great-x-100 grandson of Brindley and Dan - you'll notice the family similarities! The Butterburs haven't changed, and neither, sadly, has Will's mother - but she just *had* to meet one of the elves this time. Poor, innocent Ilmarin :) Joking with Celebrían is one thing, but this??

Hmm. It’s difficult to know what’s the right thing to do about telling the twins what happened when they were born. I know that they don’t find out for many years and I’d tend to agree with Elrond that they’re too young to at this stage to be told but I can see Celebrían’s point that they deserve to have an explanation. I certainly wouldn’t like to be the one making that decision.

I was glad to see Elrohir recovered – except for the spectacular bruise, of course! I just love reading Butterbur. He does tend to ramble, doesn’t he?! I laughed at the explanation of why the inn has been run by the same family for years, about the man taking the girl’s name. LOL.

I liked the conversation between Elladan and Elrohir. Elladan seems so in awe of what his brother did and yet so concerned too. It must have been frightening for him to see Elrohir collapse like that, no matter how well he is now. And I can’t blame Elrohir for being curious about his ability. It’ll take a lot of self-control for him not to experiment again, especially if he feels someone needs his help.

I thought Elrond and Celebrían handled the ‘promises’ discussion very well.

I loved how bewildered and happy Appleton was to have his dog back. Poor Elrohir, though. And I thought you did a great job with the ‘trial’. It was probably the best way to sort it out and I particularly like the sense of a close community. They all know each other and despite being understandably frustrated with these boys, they all genuinely want to help them too. I do feel sorry for Will. As hard as it is to say, I get the impression that he would indeed be better off away from his mother.

I was glad Elrond was able to reassure Elrohir that he’s not the only one to feel the strain of healing and let him know how proud he us. Very sensible of him too to make Elrohir promise to wait until he’s properly trained.

Author Reply: To be honest, I think this would have been the perfect opportunity to explain why Elrohir developed this ability so early - but as the revelation didn't come until much later, I had to come up with a convincing reason why! Both twins are fascinated and curious about this new-found talent, but a little wary of it as well. Elrohir will certainly do his best to keep this promise - but I can foresee some circumstances when he may not have a choice.

The 'trial' had the dual purpose of punishing the boys, and making them mend their ways. Life would have been difficult for the whole town if they had continued as they were.

Thanks for the review!

Poor Bob. His mother is a liability. Will is undoubtedly better off without his - and he seems to have developed a bit of common sense, along with a bit of skill.

I'm glad to see that Celebrian and Elrond are happy to let the twins have the puppies. Which should add to the interest of the journey home! Trust the twins to feel that two puppies can't be happy if separated. And Appleton is probably quite happy to part with two of nine.

More young twin stories? Please?

Author Reply: Welcome back from your holiday - hope you had a good time. I suspect the weather could have been better, though.

Although Will started off the more thuggish of the two, he had the best opportunity - and had the sense to take it. He's learnt a skill, and a little self-respect. Bob, on the other hand, may never get there :(

I think elven parents would be happy to have animals around the house - as long as they're carefully treated, and allowed to roam (I don't think they'd like pets in cages). Puppies and elflings are a good mix - and of course E&E couldn't part the puppies!

There's a new story up (Confusion) with young adult twins.

Thanks for the review.

Author Reply: Thanks - I'm glad you liked this. I think Will's change of heart has surprised a lot of people!

That was a surprise - I hadn't thought Will would prove better than Harry. But his new work seems to have a positive effect on him.

The idea with the puppies was sweet! Even if they could've taken Draug with them, he probably would not have lived much longer. To have the puppies as a memento to this adventure is so much better, they can live so much longer with them. And the puppies are probably as adventurous of spirit as their new masters, what should be more fun for the twins.

Thank you for sharing this!

Author Reply: I think Will's turning point was finding something he was good at, and being given a little responsibility. Bob (I got the names mixed up earlier!) is still babied by his mother, and may never gain that independence.

Draug, with his new zest for life, will probably live a lot longer now than expected, but I still think the puppies were a better idea for the twins. They just couldn't part the two.

It is a good ending to the story - that Will turned out so well is great, but most of the time we don't get 100%, so its not surprising about Bob. And puppies! Would Elladan and Elrohir like another one? The puppy from Mordor would love to come for a visit...

Author Reply: I thought it wouldn't be very realistic if both Will and Bob had a total transformation - but if Bob gets away from his mother, he may have a chance too.

I'm sure E&E would love another puppy! As long as they're not splitting up a pair, that is ...

Oh I liked the way that turned out. I was as surprised as the twins by Will's offer to fix the knife (and as doubtful about the outcome) and I was still more shocked by his apology and his free work. Good for him. I'm glad it turned out well for him, poor kid. And Harry doesn't surprise me--as long as his mother is there making excuses for him, he'll never learn.

And of course I loved the puppies. I'm glad they got them both. That was very generous and kind/understanding of Appleton.

This was a great story, Jay. I really enjoyed it. :-)

Author Reply: I wanted a happy ending for this tale. At least things are improving for Will, and he's trying hard. Finding something he's good at has made all the difference.

*Cough* I just realised that I've got my own characters' names mixed up - it was Bob who was sentenced to work in Butterbur's kitchen, not Harry! I've edited that now. (See what comes of writing the final paragraphs and posting without a final proofread at 1am!) Bob's biggest problem is still his mother :(

Originally Elrohir was going to chose just one of the puppies - then I realised that to the twins, parting them would be terribly cruel - so they had both.

Thanks for the review!
