A Gift of Freedom  by Avon 5 Review(s)
BodkinReviewed Chapter: 1 on 1/11/2005
'Our brother’s land.'

It is so easy to see Elrohir and Elladan as foster brothers to Estel - but they have been playing a similar role to generations of Isildur's heirs. It must be horribly difficult for them to love and lose - to old age, sickness, death in battle - so many who have grown from childhood to full strength in the care of their 'brothers'.

I love seeing the freeing of the bird - as it flies, it is as if Arathorn's soul is being released from the cares of the world.

Lovely imagery.

Well, I like to think so - as far as I can see canon supports me, if anything. I'm sure that some stayed less time, came when they were older or saw less of the twins - but I think many would have been dear to them. The loving these mortals and then losing them has to be one of the things that made the Rivendell community different from somewhere like Mirkwood, IMO.

Cheers,

great story, I like how the twins were such good friends with Arathorn, and the release of the bird that they had given him.

Author Reply: Thanks, grumpy. I just love friendship, basically.

Now this is weird...I'm reponding to the same author for a second time.

You certainly have a way of tugging at the heart strings.

You may not see the wonderfulness of your small stories but beleive me readers make the decision not writers.

I still would like to see if you can swap the angle and see immortality from Aragorns view...we can see the Immortals view of mortaility as it impacts upon their souls.

I love the idea of such a close relationship between the twins and Arathorn. One wonders if he discussed with them what his ideas for his childs future would be. I wonder how hard that time when he told them what he desired should he die was like. The gift of foresight was known among the Numenoreans...who knows whether Arathorn knew what would befall himself...or maybe he foresaw his sons future instead.

Anyway, waffling again. Thank you for such a lovely scene. I can almost feel the wind through their hair at such a height.

(I had thought that that was where Avon came from! Oh how I adored him! I have always loved characters with a hint of good and bad...they always seem more real!)

Author Reply: Thank you - that's a lovely review.

Well, I'll try thinking about it and seeing if anything pops up. I guess the closest I've gone to that (in a slightly backwards way) is in 'A Bitter Gift' - but that's very early in Aragorn's life. Hopefully he came to terms with it more: and indeed I think he did.

I think leading the sort of warrior's life they did they would all have talked about death and any last requests. I think they would be too honest to hide behind the pretence that 'it won't happen to me'. I certainly like to think of Arathorn and the twins as having been close, but then I'm a sicker for any sort of friendship.

And hey - waffle away; it's very interesting.

Yep, Avon most certainly did come from a certain computer tech dressed in black leather. Blake's 7 was my first real fandom and I still love it. Avon is just the sort of character I fall for - as you said both good and bad, self-sufficient and aloof, yet somehow vulnerable.

This is truly lovely, Avon!

Author Reply: Gosh, thanks! I don't know - I don't like much any of the stories I'm writing at the moment - but I know I'm the world's worst judge of my own work.

This is great! I had to read it a few times to understand everything but it's a great idea!
