I found myself near tears after reading this story. I wish I had the competence to put the way reading it made me feel into words. Alas, I can only tell you that this story is being bookmarked and will be recommended to my friends as an excellent read.

Beautilfully done.

Simply fabulous. Can't think of just one point to comment on, for the entire tale seems perfect to me. Thanks for sharing.

Author Reply: i am very pleased you enjoyed the story. It seemed to drive itself as I wrote it, for originally it was planned as a one chapter short (the first chapter). But the Captain-General insisted on being heard and I am very glad he did.

Thanks for the review :)

The twist of time in the center of this story was clever. It really underlined the way that Boromir must feel when he can't supply what Faramir needs, even though Boromir does not appear in the second half of the story. The characterizations of the two brothers were well done, and I liked the young archer in Faramir's care. I think what I felt worst about was that they couldn't even bury the fallen ranger.

Author Reply: I had the rangers take care of their friend when Faramir was away as I couldn't decide if he would have known or approved of disposing of the body even the way they did, instead of just hiding it; with an uncertain night ahead of them it may have been best not to have spent the time and physical effort. I imagine it would have been a terribly difficult choice for any leader to make :( I did feel his men, OTOH, would have felt very strongly about it and thus chosen their time when their captain was distracted and not tell him details (just "yeah, yeah, done, boss").

Thanks for the review!

Actually, another term you can use for a Second Lieutenant is Subaltern. This is still an acceptable term for the 2nd Lt rank within the British Army at least and would be more recognisable than the rank of Ensign (or Cornet if it was a cavalry unit) which is more common to the navy now. I served with the British Army for eleven years and we used to call 2nd Lieutenants, 'Subbies'.

Author Reply: I had run across these other ranks while looking up stuff but hadn't realized that they were similar in rank, just different units/duties. Thanks for the info- I love learning all these little interesting tidbits that I might otherwise never run into.

What I found intriguing was how closely the ranks of the young US army continued to closely match those in the British army for many years.
