There and Back  by Lindelea 4 Review(s)

This was lovely! I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the bits of the book/movie relating to the present happenings. The ending made me wish they had put that bit in the movie. Good job! :)

Author Reply: Thanks! I think they ought to have put the knighting in the film, too! Wonder if it's too late to sneak it into the extended edition?

Thanks for reviewing!

Lindlea,

This is truly a remarkable story you've written. I encountered it thanks to a message from Marigold (I review a lot of the challenge stories she oversees on LJ) and I admit I was thoroughly pleased by it.

I really liked the way you interwove Pippin's thoughts/memories throughout the whole story.
When Marigold described you as a 'prolific writer', she was not just giving idle praise. I intend to make a point of searching out some of your other work.

Congratulations on a fine fic. Well done!

I just this afternoon discovered that this story was gathering hits for some reason, though it was posted some months ago, and your comment about Marigold made me wonder... and checking her "picks" page I saw that she had listed this story, along with Baylor's first story (an author on my own "top ten" list). Such an honour; I can hardly believe the company I'm keeping.

Anyhow, I appreciate the comments. Have fun reading!

I always wondered how Pippin and Merry got from Gondor/Fields of the Pelannor to the feast, and I really enjoyed your telling of it. That was a lovely take on Merry and Pippin's relationship-- not too sappy, but caring and understanding. I'm amazed that this was just your first story too--it's so good!!

Author Reply: Thank you! That gap in the book between "Pippin under the troll" and "Pippin serving the feast" has always bothered me, and the little bit of explanation Gimli gives hardly satisfies the itch. That's probably why it's the first subject I tackled in fanfic.

I wrote another, longer version after finishing this one, which is also posted here at SoA, called "Choices". It shows the same events from Beregond's perspective, and goes a bit further on the timeline.

I have yet another story (making a trilogy of sorts) that I began after finishing "Choices", from the perspective of Bergil, Beregond's son, but it stalled in the middle and then I got kidnapped by hobbits and never got back to it. One of these days...

Thanks for the encouragement.

Wonderful story, Lindelea. I liked that you interspersed Pippin's dreams while unconscious with his wakeful moments, that was very well written. I also liked the ending, I always get misty eyed when Pippin and Merry are being honored for their brave deeds.

I think this story has been percolating for years, ever since I read LOTR and wanted more. What a shock it was to reach the ending (Sam coming home from the Havens), and that was it! Guess I've been trying to make up for it ever since.

I thought it a challenge to weave book and movie together into a cohesive whole. The films really brought the book back to my interest once more, after it had sat on a dusty shelf for several years, and even though every departure from "book canon" sets my teeth on edge, I take my hat off to all who put so much work into bringing this classic story to life. (And that goes for all the fanfic writers, as well, who strive for excellence and breathe yet more life into the characters.)

Wait a minute. I don't wear hats.

Well, you know what I mean.
