Naming the Baby  by Salsify 8 Review(s)

This was so adorable. I loved Faramir's thoughts and the light it threw on his relationship with his shield-maiden wife. Eowyn's spirit came through so beautifully in this, as well as the difference in their cultures and ways of thinking. A thoroughly delightful story.

Author Reply: Thank you. Eowyn gave up being a shieldmaiden, but I could never quite see her giving it up in favor of becoming a mouse. The two of them must have had some pretty lively disagreements over the years!

I liked this story - it made me laugh, especially this last Sil reference:
"Yes," said Faramir gratefully, "and who knows, the child may be a girl. We could call her Aredhel."
Does he still not get it, or is he trying to be funny? If it's the latter, I thought it was funny, but I wonder if Eowyn did?

Author Reply: I kept asking that myself but I could never get a straight answer out of him. Either way, I suspect he got to test whether he was really as good a hurdler as he thought he was.

Thanks for the review!

Hey, cute ficlet.
I had an interesting thought, bouncing off your 'superstition' --- Perhaps Finduilas picked "Faramir"? Rather than being related to Denethor's attitude towards the baby, maybe Finduilas thought by naming her second son after a disobedient soldier who ran off to war and died young, she could protect him from that fate?
Cheers,
Chibi-Kaz

Author Reply: So many people in Gondor seemed to have been named for people who came to famously bad ends that I have to wonder. Faramir was born into dangerous times and Finduilas might very well have thought it was tempting fate to give him a name that was too glorious.

Thanks!

hehehe, that was great!

"I like the way it sounds?" he suggested hopefully.

LOL! So cute. I adore Faramir and Eowyn's relationship. Good job :)

Author Reply: Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

That's the way to do it, Faramir. (What a strategist!) Come up with a series of real stinkers, so that when you finally suggest a reasonable option, Eowyn will grab it with both hands and agree!

Author Reply: I'm still not entirely sure how serious Faramir was about "Turin", but one of my friends can confirm that that strategy does work!

Bwahaha, very funny! The imagery of Éowyn leaping over a hedge in pursuit of Faramir is just too much LOL!

Author Reply: Thank you. I think I'd be inclined to do the same if somebody suggested naming my child Turin.

Adorable. "Why had he let her get between him and the gate?" I think Eowyn needs to come up with her own name suggestion!

Author Reply: Thanks! I think she might have had a hand in coming up with "Elboron" since the name's put together in a way that would probably seem natural to the Rohirrim. Plus there aren't any famous tragedies connected with it!
