Ho, Ho! My Lads  by Dreamflower 5 Review(s)

What a nice change of pace to have a visit from the dwarves! Bilbo should be quite pleased that they are not emptying him of his larder this time around, although he may wish he could go on another adventure. But not until Frodo has come of age.

My goodness, doesn't Pippin ever stop? My ears are ringing and I am quite exhausted from all of his endless chatter and running around. And curious? Well, that is a sign of higher intelligence, although Pippin does not use it on a daily basis. At least he, Merry, Frodo, and the bathroom floor are all clean now that Pippin has finished giving them all a bath.

"Merry looked up alertly. He knew what Bilbo meant, he’d heard it from adults enough to know that it meant “Little pitchers have big ears”. In other words, there was something very interesting indeed going on here. And he intended to know what. He glanced over at Frodo, who regarded him with a raised brow, and a look that said “Don’t try it”, which Merry regarded as a direct challenge."

This is my favourite quote from this chapter. I can picture it clearly in my head, which makes me chuckle all the more. Frodo and Merry know each other so well. It's brilliant!

Author Reply: Bilbo had visits from Dwarves from time to time--I'm guessing maybe once every year or two. And of course, we know he hasn't really lost his taste for adventure, has he?

He's a little perpetual motion machine, isn't he? *Especially* when Bilbo (who has, after all, been warned by his mom) allows him to get into the honey or other sweets. And top it off with the excitement and stimulation of his first Dwarves and he's just over the top. I had fun with the bath scene; we discussed actually showing the bath, but then we decided it was cuter just to show the aftermath, and let the imagination go to work. (You *will* notice who got the job of giving the bath, after *someone else* allowed him to get coated in flour and honey? LOL!)

Yes, Frodo knows his Merry very well indeed, and is quite aware of the sorts of schemes that have been known to hatch in the Brandybuck head.

Delightful chapter! I love "little" Pippin! So innocent, and already quite the Fool-of-a-Took. I can't wait to see where this story is leading.

(These four reviews were accidentally lost. Thanks to Nilmandra for telling me how to fix them. I am not going to try to recreate my replies, LOL!)

There were pickles, and pickled onions and pickled beets. And there were two kinds of bread from the bakery, and four kinds of cheeses, from soft and white to hard and yellow, and a crock of fresh butter, and strawberry jam. And there was plenty of drink to wash it all down, tea and ale and milk and even coffee, which Bilbo had brewed in honor of the Dwarves.

You know, I've been waiting for a fic writer to remember that Bilbo brewed coffee for the dwarves in The Hobbit! Yay!

This is marvelous. You have a great sense of detail and dialogue. Really well written! I just love visiting Bag End. You've got all my favorite people here. Thanks a million for posting this story!

This was just what I needed to make my day...little Pippin and his inquisitive ways. I could just picture him splashing in the tub, singing:

Rubber ducky, you're the one.
You make bathtime lots of fun
Rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you

Merry and Pippin are both about to cause some mischief, I bet. I wonder what kind of 'commissions' Bilbo has in mind. Looking forward to the next chapter!

What a grand collaboration--this is fabulous! You've perked up my own ears--now I'm wondering what's up with the "commissions". Thay won't be a secret for too long with Merry and Pippin up to their usual mischief! :-) I'll be back for more...
