Frodo's Cooking Lesson  by Dreamflower 8 Review(s)

My mouth is watering although I would prefer a good ale rather than wine. I wish I had a Bilbo around to mentor my cooking and someone with a sense of taste to appreciate my efforts!

Mmmmmhhh! I was a little hungry before I read this...now I'm famished...and it's ten till midnight here! And unfortunately I'm not a Took or a Brandybuck, and have no enthusiasm or talent for going on pantry rades. :-) Thanks so much for including the recipe! I'm going to add this story to my favourites list and try it soon! In the meanwhile, do you think Frodo and Merry might share some of theirs? :-) God bless,
Galadriel

Author Reply: So sorry if it made you hungry, LOL! Recipe!fics can do that, can't they?

If you do try it, let me know how you like it! (And I am sure they would share, just as long as you remembered whose mushrooms they really were. *grin*)

Not only did that story make me very, very happy, but it also made me very, very hungry. *delighted laugh* Oh, I did find this very charming. Frodo, so nervous and so very earnest. And little Merry at the end, oh, I was rather fond of him too.

And I should say, I love how you write Bilbo.

Author Reply: I'm so glad it made you happy--and hungry. That's rather hobbity, isn't it? I'm glad you liked Frodo in this, and Merry.

And I'm so glad you love the way I do Bilbo. I'm very fond of the old chap.

Oh... yum! And here I was just thinking, I'm beginning to wish she had a real recipe in here, it sounds so good - and then scrolled down a little more and there it was. :-)

Makes me hungry just reading it, and it's all so homey and comfy and tasty. Thank you!

Author Reply: I just *love* recipe!fics. This was the second one I wrote. (Missus Maggot's Mushrooms was my first) but I've done about five or six, I think. Last year, the LJ community Shire_kitchen actually had a recipe!fic challenge.

If you should try the recipe out, let me know how they come out for you!

A stuffed mushroom recipe! I'm going to have to try this. What kind of fresh herbs? What kind of seasoning to taste? Just salt and pepper like Frodo used? Having recently switched to vegetarian, I find this very exciting!

So Sam was out at the Cotton farm, eh? Gee, I wonder if he caught sight of a certain lass there. Of course, they are too young for anything really romantic, and besides, Frodo was there, but still, they were childhood sweethearts as I recall in your stories.

It's lovely to see Bilbo and Frodo enjoying a quiet moment in their life at home as a family. I'd like to see more of such moments.

I had to laugh at Merry, stating how most hobbits would feel, that there weren't enough stuffed mushrooms. Actually, after looking over this recipe, I think I agree with him.

Does Bilbo have any other recipes he can share?

Author Reply: I love recipe!fics. For the fresh herbs, I use whatever I've got growing at the time, usually some chives, maybe a bit of rosemary or thyme, or parsley. And usually just some salt and a little pepper, although now that I have to restrict my own salt intake, I sometimes use a commercial lemon-herb seasoning as a substitute. It's a very good recipe. We eat vegetarian one night a week, and the other evening I made these, only I stuffed two large portobello caps. It was as good as having a steak or something.

Well, Sam's only about 10--the equivalent of a human 6 year old, and Rosie's more Marigold's playmate right now. But he's fond of her already, and I'm sure they will develop the friendship that leads them to love before long.

I think this is the only recipe!fic I did with Bilbo in it, but I do have some others listed. "Missus Maggot's Mushrooms" is not strictly vegetarian--it has bacon in it, but they are very good anyway. And I have, I think, about three others listed. You'll come across them as you work through the chronology.

What a cute story. And even better a recipe to go with it. Hmm, I may have to make some next week for my mother's birthday. Poor Frodo though, he really did get a scare from Farmer Maggot for taking thsoe mushrooms. Glad they could both put it behind them in FOTR.

Author Reply: Why thank you!! You will have to let me know how they turn out! I love recipe fics.
When you think that Frodo was very nearly as frightened by the idea of Farmer Maggot as he was by Black Riders, it must have been traumatic indeed! But I'm glad myself that they settled things amicably, and that we could like Farmer Maggot.

Bilbo quirked an eyebrow at him in inquiry. “Mushrooming, eh?” he asked.

Aaaawwww! Too cute! What a great moment!

The only thing wrong is that it's too short!

Please write more -- I just love your Bilbo-Frodo vision. It's beautiful. I love to go and spend time with them in Bag End.

Author Reply: I love it too. I've been in a very Bilboish mood lately. And it's nice to do Bilbo-young!Frodo for a change.

Very nicely done, indeed! And to include the recipe at the end, the perfect touch. Perhaps you ought to write a Shire cookbook!

(I laughed about the wine. Clever Bilbo!)

Author Reply: This is my second recipe fic. I have a few more mushroom recipes waiting for plot bunnies to accompany them.

When Frodo was making these mushrooms for his birthday in "Conspiracy" he tossed off a cup of Old Winyards, and so this explains that little habit, LOL!
