I have just come to this after reading the last chapter and notes from "The Twang of Tookish Bowstrings Part One". Between the author's notes, and some of the reviews, you expressed the notion that some readers will not read a story which is advertised as being primarily about an original character, or one which is canon, but a minor character. Back when it was newly posted, I read all thee way through "The Rescue" as you posted it. I became quite impressed with Ferdi's sister. She kept her wits about her, and her family safe, while playing a dangerous game of charming Lotho's ruffians out of valuable information to pass along to the Thain. At that time I had not read this one. Now I begin to get a glimpse of how she became that kind of strong-witted Hobbitess. The grown-up little lass who had wished she could don breeches and ride on the wagon box probably had a lot of empathy for her cousin who HAD to put them on and pass as a lad! Add my vote to working on whatever of you WIPs the Muse allows. Especially in The Shire, every canon character has dozens of cousins! The stories of any one of them add depth and color to the world out Good Professor created. Besides, You left this one, and "Rescue", and "Sleeping Dogs" at rather exciting places! (By-the-way, you can chalk my recent rush of reading old tales and reviewing to work being cut to 10 to 15 hours per week by the C-19 pandemic. But at least I am still working!)

Ferdi and Rosemary with a happy family. There's a novelty. I wonder who the mute lad is. And what Ferdinand has found in the woods. Nothing good I'm sure! I look forward to finding out.

(Just HOW many stories are you writing at the moment? How do you keep track of them all?) Good thing that they managed to get the children out of the visit to Jessamine - it doesn't sound like much fun. I'm looking forward to some happy Ferdi and unpersecuted Rosemary. Author Reply: Millions. Billions. Ok, it only seems like that many. I have quite a sheaf of stories that are merely story summaries, another small group of outlined stories, and several in the middle of writing. Actually, "Glisters" is written to the end, with merely the details of Merry's operation to be added. Most of the new story ("Greening of the Year") is written as well, for it is short and to-the-point. Not a lot of character development, but hopefully interesting and full of action. "Thain" is very difficult writing and I'm not enjoying the current chapter (Pippin's birthday), which is why I dredged up Rosemary's story that has been languishing nearly two months. It's much more fun, at the moment! And "Greening" is sheer stress-relief. Very little thought went into that story, I fear... but it was interesting to write.

It's good to see Old Ferdi and his brother, before the troubles come. But, have I read this somewhere before? This chapter sounds very familiar... Author Reply: This was published a couple of months ago and then left on the back burner while life got incredibly busy and the Muse went to Hawaii for a prolonged stay. You might have read it then. Nice to see you!

Umm, the first chapter says this takes place in 1388, but the second says Fatty Bolger is eleven years old. He should have been eight in 1388. And how old is Rosemary, exactly? I think her age is mentioned somewhere in "Pearl", but can't remember where. Author Reply: You're right about the age--I was looking at the wrong chart, that had a different birthdate for Freddy (1377, which JRRT changed on a later genealogy to 1380, I think). I also got "Gloriana" wrong, so her name will be changed just as soon as I get time to incorporate all my editor-friend's comments! I think Rosemary's about five years older than Ferdibrand. It's another thing I need to look up (in Pearl, probably, as she's an OC!) as it's not in my notes. Thanks for the catch! Author Reply: Yes, Rosemary is five years older than Ferdi.

Ugh, Gloriana sounds hideously dull. Loved the rest of the family joking without her beware of it! Looking forward to the visit to Whittacres. Hopefully you'll get to it soon (hint). Author Reply: Whittacres is coming soon, but first we have to have the first time Halley meets the Tooks...

Oh, Lindelea, I am so looking forward to reading more of this! I think your writing is excellent, and your characterization is wonderful. Do keep it up! So, they have ponies from Rohan, do they? Good! Author Reply: I suspect that the southern plain is Rohan, yes. Thanks for the encouragement!

I see a bit of the "grumbliest hobbit in the Great Smials" in the pre-fire Ferdinand, but mostly he resembles a far more mobile version of the one from "StarFire" and the latter part of "Flames". I'm looking forward to Rosemary's perspective - figured you'd tortured Ferdi enough and had to move on to his sister, eh ;)? I've been curious what Rosemary was was doing after "Pearl," but figured she was saving money and preparing the kind of household goods a girl would bring to her marriage. Thank you for a glimpse of "Old" Ferdi; he seems like the best kind of uncle to have. Author Reply: They have a "best kind of uncle" and a fussy grandmother. Ah, well, you win some, you lose some. This story looks to be very promising. I quite like Rosemary, and have been curious as to what she was up to between "Pearl of Great Price" and "Flames". Also, I don't think I've ever seen Ferdi's family pre-fire. I can already tell they're very different from how I'm used to seeing them. Eager to see them developed. Will we be seeing much of Pippin et al. in this one? I seem to remember something about Paladin and Ferdinand being great friends before the fire. Which reminds me, Ferdinand and Paladin hardly speak to each other at all in later stories, as far as I know. What happens to their friendship? Will this story or "Thain" deal with that? Keep up the excellent work! Author Reply: Thanks for reviewing! You can catch a glimpse of Ferdi's family pre-fire in "Cousins and Other Nuisances" here on SoA. Ferdi's uncle isn't in that story, though. This is the first time, I think, that people have been able to catch more than a glimpse of "old" Ferdi.
