What a lovely idea that Marry should meet the eagle. I saw the link to this story in the MPA contest and am very glad I chose to come and read it.

Oh... this was completely delightful. Majestic, in a way. I could really feel Merry's awe and stun in the presence of a creature so mystical. The eagle seemed so very lordly, and I'm sure Merry was quite surprised to find out that he was talking to one of Bilbo's eagles! I also really liked how Merry explained that Pippin was quick to foolishness etc, but also quick to jump to the aid of the ones he loves, that was very heart-warming. It really delights me to think that Merry met up with one of those occult beasts, I can picture it so perfectly, their conversation was just right. Thank you for such a wonderful story, I am really glad that I read this.

I like the description of Pippin as a falcon - 'Fast to get into trouble, and fast to act before he thinks, but just as fast to rise to the defense of those he loves'.

This conversation is very insightful, too.

'"Hobbit children would be much like our fledglings, then. They often try to fly before their wings are fully feathered." Landroval observed dryly.

"We can’t fly later, either, you know." Merry countered.

"There are many ways to fly." '

Lovely story

"There are many ways to fly." I liked that line in particular.

The eagles are an intesting phenomenon in Tolkien. Lots of times we just hear that they're coming and then the story kind of fades to black so we don't see what they do (although I guess we see them after the rescue from the wolves in The Hobbit, but not in the Battle of Five Armies--there they come and then Bilbo passes out). So I liked seeing one of them talking to Merry here.

I love this story! The wise eagle, the caretaker hobbit, the discussion of Peregrin and the appropriateness of his name, Merry's finally finding a way to take a breather, despite his worry, and Aragorn's insistence that he do so. Lovely portrait of a worried cousin, and his appreciation of one who came to the aid of his dear ones. Wonderfully done. :-)
