Chain Reaction  by Estelle 2 Review(s)

Excellent writing...however, I cannot stress it enough when I say
that one should NEVER give liquids to an unconscious person, because
the liquid goes into the lungs, not the stomach.

There is no "reflex swallowing" that many writers seem to think
exist. The tiny flap of tissue that temporarily separates the
esophagus (food pipe) from the trachea (air pipe) is controlled
voluntarily by someone who is awake. When a person is nconscious,
this piece of tissue is relaxed and thus any liquid entering
the mouth enters the trachea (breathing tube) and goes directly
into the lungs.

In effect, giving liquids to an unconscious person allows one to
murder them by drowning them, depending on the amount of liquid
administered. If not drowned immediately, they will suffer pneumonia.

So---please do not have anyone give unconscious characters liquids
(or solids either). This is the reason people in comas died from
dehydration. It was only until the advent of sterile vein infusions
that unconscious people could be kept alive.

Author Reply: Ahh, okies. Will keep that in mind. Thank you for pointing it out for us! :)
