All Shall Fade  by Meldewen Ilce 3 Review(s)
Same as last reviewReviewed Chapter: 1 on 10/10/2004
I did remember that line right after I posted my last review, and realized where you're coming from. I'm sorry for offending you. Since when I mess up, I like to explain why I messed-up, I'll tell you why I reacted the way I did, even though I'm you probably don't care and just wish I would go away: one of the things that annoyed me in the movies was Arwen getting ill because of the Ring. This felt like it was very similar to that, so it bothered me. If I'd realized you meant "beings of Light" like Frodo saw Glorfindel, then I wouldn't have posted my previous review. Thank you for correcting me!

Oh trust me, that annoyed me to no end too even though I liked Arwen expanded role in the movies, I thought that twist was just a cheap way of giving Aragorn even more motivation to claim his inheritance!

Yeah when I wrote this the thing with movie Arwen was far from my mind and I was thinking of Glorfindel...

Thank you!

I can go with the idea that Vilya might have reacted when the Ring was destroyed, since it's power was going to start decreasing, and that Elrond might have felt the result of that. But while it's a nice idea, Elves aren't exactly "beings of Light." They might seem that way in LOTR, but there are lots of counterexamples to that theory in the Sil. Like Eol (who wasn't very nice at all) and Maeglin (who wanted to marry his first-cousin and was so mad that she wouldn't marry him he betrayed Gondolin to the forces of Morgoth) to give two examples.

Please don't hit me - I'm not trying to be an evil flamer, just helpful! I always like to know when my ideas might not work so well, so when I find an example of somebody else's idea that doesn't quite seem to work to me, I try to point it out.

The quote above is speaking of Glorfindel, and Frodo's first impressions of him upon meeting him, and I believe it is what I was thinking of when I wrote the following piece of dialogue in All Shall Fade:

Bilbo nodded, “Precisely, they seemed that way because to them, beings of Light, it was physically distressing, almost painful one might say, to hear those hateful words of the Dark Lord’s tongue.”

I believe Frodo's first impressions of Glorfindel was accurate in showing that a light does indeed shine in the Elves despite the fact they have some pretty dark moments in their history. Upon finding this to back my claims I am quite satisfied with the way this ficlet was written and I will not change it...

Oooo, lovely! This is a question I'd wondered about but not seen addressed.
