It was a great story and I loved it till this point. But you have gone the way of PJ and put phrases like 'I know his uses, and they are few' into Denethor's mouth. Never did Denethor speak such words. *sighs sadly*

Just the quick description of the bridge at Osgiliath blew me away!

I did a search for Denethor stories and this came up. I must have missed it somehow. Excellent beginning. Your descriptions are beautiful and telling and your battle was superb!

Wonderful chapter and wonderful story. I was waiting for your updates on ff.net and when you didn't update your story I was afraid that you stopped writing... Now I'm extremely happy that I found your story here :) You have a beautiful style of writing. I'm in love with this story. Really great work!

An excellent and shivery chapter!

I loved the transition from the immediacy of Denethor's living hell to the story and legend of later years. The fire is far more comfortable in the hearth as a backdrop to a grandfather telling a scary story than it was on the pyre. Pippin's interaction with his little granddaughters is wonderful!

Loved the bit about Denethor's desk with talons for feet that had fascinated Faramir as a child.

And of course, the poignancy of Denethor's finally showing his love for Faramir at a time when Faramir cannot hear or see him is tragic; because we know that father and son will never have the opportunity to speak to each other again.

I don't think i've ever reviewed this story, but I've read it form it's beginning & am glad to see the update. Thanks for writing the Hurin men so close to the character I see them as - good also to see Imrahil. And thanks for giving us the human side of Denethor.

Hey nrink- nice to see you here! Welcome! I've been meaning to re-read _Phrygian Flute_ and post some thoughts after our last conversation about continuity. Will do that this weekend.
cheers,
Maya

Wow. Best chapter yet. Soul-searing in every sense of the word. You really caught the pain and love between Denethor and Faramir; it was heartbreaking to see them actually connect, only to be torn apart by Denethor's bitterness on realizing that Boromir was truly dead, and Denethor's cursed pride in feeling that no one could come close to Boromir and Faramir should not presume to comfort his father, or be comforted by him. Brrr. Denethor is really starting to brew that cup of bitterness now.

Liked the Gaiman quote. Faramir was wise to throw the note into the brazier rather than sending it to Father; Denethor is in no mood to be told to "live" by anyone, least of all the son who isn't Boromir.
