The Eyes of the White Tower  by Branwyn 3 Review(s)

Aw, this is so sad! You write very well. I loved Denethor's vision of his sons as kids, and little Faramir in his livery - isn't that the same livery that's given to Pippin in the movie, or will be in the ROTK extended edition?

Author Reply: "The Art of the Return of the King," one of the movie picture books, mentions that Pippin is given the livery worn by Faramir as a child, and I borrowed the idea for my story. I don't know if we will be lucky enough to get that scene back in the extended edition, but I do hope so. Thanks for the kind review--Branwyn

Very nice story! I like the way you write Denethor's progression towards despair and madness; it makes so much more sense than the movie scenes. And the mention of Imrahil fighting at the gates. And the palantir flashbacks to the boys' childhood; Faramir not wanting to take off his child-sized Guard uniform. Pippin is characterized brilliantly; one can just see what's left of his innocence being shredded by his having to watch this family tragedy unfold in the shadow of utter destruction and not being able to provide much help, though he tries. (actually, he might have been of more help than he knows; I'm no doctor, but I would think that Faramir must have been getting quite dehydrated in his fever, so Pippin's getting him to drink some water would have helped keep Faramir alive until Faramir was taken to the Houses of Healing.) Yet even though he's not too hungry, he still manages to eat - very hobbitlike!

Author Reply: Hullo, Raksha--
Thanks for writing! I do think Peregrin would have cared for Faramir as best he could, instead of standing by while he got sicker and sicker. And, yes, I do know that our man Faramir has grey eyes and dark hair! I had just seen the movie when I wrote this, so I indulged myself and gave him reddish hair and blue eyes. ;-D

Author Reply: No, I got the eye color right in the story. I am stopping while I am ahead. LOL

A very well done glimpse into what that night might have held for Pippin, Denethor and Faramir. You wrote Denethor's grief very well and the way he turned away those who would ask for his guidance! Thank you for this!

Author Reply: You are very kind! This was my first story--after I saw how Denethor was portrayed in the ROTK movie, I was furious and took pen in hand to defend him (I figured it was a little late to complain to Peter Jackson). And whenever I read "The Siege of Gondor" in ROTK, I always wondered about Peregrin standing alone in that great hall; how lonely and afraid he must have been.
