Bilbo`s Gift  by Anso the Hobbit 6 Review(s)
Grey WondererReviewed Chapter: 1 on 7/24/2004
The perfect gift for Merry and a wonderful story. I enjoyed it very much. I love how Merry seems to know that he may see Bilbo again some day. Nice connection to the quest!

Author Reply: Thank you! I figure that Merry, just like Frodo, knows that maybe someday he will have an adventure that gives him the opportunity to see Bilbo again. And as Merry loves maps I couldn`t give him anything else, lol. I`m glad you liked it.

How sweet and touching your tale was; it brings up many nostalgic feelings. I also loved the way your story ever so slightly foreshadows the adventure they are soon to take, and the irony that Merry should have a map of the simple and enduring Shire, when they will be going into peril few can imagine. And you captured how the hobbits must feel about dear old Bilbo perfectly!

Aw, that was sweet. It's nice to get a special rememberance. I like his hesitation in opening the gift, trying to determine what it was. Very nice.

Author Reply: Merry likes to think and ponder about what things are so trying to solve the puzzle of what the gift was is just typical him. I`m glad you liked it!

Tramping around the Shire on an adventure, eh? Makes me wonder if Bilbo might have been prescient in some way - knowing what Merry might need in the future. Well done!

Author Reply: Oh, Bilbo knew Merry well I believe, as Merry would have stayed at Bag End a lot while growing up. I`m glad you liked it!

Such a lovely story! I love the little details and side notes that give depth and perspective, and the glimpses of Merry's character: thoughtful (going around the smial to tidy up because of visitors expected next day), typical Brandybuck (he has a boat of his own!), loving to hike, loving maps, and his affection for his cousins shines through.

It is easy to believe that he would later organise a conspiracy and all the trappings thereof, and follow Frodo nearly to the ends of the earth.

Author Reply: Oh, thank you Lindelea!

Oh, wonderful! "Merry was excited and happy and giggled a little, feeling a little as a child who had been given an unexpected treat. In all Bilbo`s hustle and bustle with the magnificent Party and his preparations to leave, Merry was not forgotten."

What a perfect gift, and this ties in beautifully with Merry's interest in the maps in Rivendell once they arrive there. Thank you for giving this bunny such a nice home!

Author Reply: Thank you Shirebound! It was a great bunny to write, and as Merry loves maps so much finding what Bilbo should give him wasn`t very difficult. I`m glad you liked it! :)
