Blood of Kings, The  by Chris 3 Review(s)

Chris, I enjoyed your story about Coren and the lighting of the beacons so much that I started looking at your others and found this little jewel. I love horses...but have never had one of my own. It isn't often that a story can convey the emotion of the animal and the person, but you did a fine job of making them clear in this one. I can't remember reading a young Eomer story before, and I thoroughly enjoyed the glimpse into the life of the Rohirrim and the bond they have with their horses. I lost my dad last year, and Eomer's loss certainly spoke to my heart *sniff* and I'm not even a child anymore. Sometimes grieving takes a LONG time to commence...this was another wonderful story! (I'm trying my hand at a Legolas/Arod story...if I can even come close to capturing what you have here, I'll be ecstatic... :-) but probably not!)

This story was recommended to me by a friend, and I am SO glad she listened to the impulse to tell me about it! It is, just on its own, a beautiful, well-crafted, tightly written story; the characterizations, both Human and Equine, are exquisite. VERY Tolkienesque in flavour, as well.

But factoring in how wonderfully, accurately and superbly you write your horses and their actions, this transcends "just" being a good story. It becomes a magnificent piece of work, memorable and powerful, a thing that brought me to tears. I am privileged to have a horse in my life--the brattish and adorable Jasper--and though I was not lucky enough to see him born, I got to know him before he was a full day old. He is now almost ready to be ridden, and I look forward to that day with great joy.

But you have, with this story, brought back those wonderful days in the barn with my new little friend, when he was far shorter than I and so shaky, so sweet, so confused, all legs and eyes... :-) Happy memories of days and nights in the fragrant hay, with his mother grazing nearby and watching me constantly. Thank you for bringing that back to me--and thank you for posting this story!

What a nice story this is. I haven't seen many writers tackle a young Eomer story. It's wonderful to have someone explore what the relationship of the Rohirrim is to the horse, how it begins in youth and is such a part of their culture. You've touched beautifully on the emotions and rememberances of a child that has lost a parent (it made me grab the hankys), that desperate longing to have the parent back and the realization that they are always with you. Theoden's love of his sister's children and his respect for his brother-in-law was very true to character I thought.
Excellent work!
