Sword Play  by Lindelea 6 Review(s)
LarnerReviewed Chapter: Prologue on 11/21/2006
I don't remember reading this one before, Lindelea, but it is wonderful! Dear Goldilocks, getting two lessons in one day, and truly getting to know one who one day will mean the world to her.

Lovely!

Aww... that was great! I had thought from your other fics that Goldi and Farry had a certain history. And I like the ending, with Sam behaving in such a surprising way, but very Sam-like!

Thanks for sharing, Nienor

Oh, I'm so glad to see you back - I was hoping you'd return soon - and with such a darling story. It's wonderful to see Goldi and Farry playing grown-up, knowing that they'll be spending a lifetime together. Beginnings are so fun.

I wonder what Sam was thinking, seeing Goldi and Farry battling in the garden. Pippin obviously thinks his son needs to know how to handle a weapon, but Farry doesn't think a lass needs to know how. Now Sam didn't spend much time wielding a sword himself, but I think he understands that the Shire is worth fighting for, to use a movie phrase. I guess he decides that if she's old enough to ask, she's old enough to be taught.

Author Reply: I think you're right. The Shire is worth fighting for, and from what Sam had seen in the outlands, he might have thought it a good thing for his children to know how to defend themselves.

Don't know if I ever answered this review in an email. SoA says I never answered it here. Thanks!

I was wondering when this would show up somewhere! The edits work well, and the story is, as I thought before, charming and sweet.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I am a german shepherd person myself. My family has had and bred them since I was a young girl. I know the pain you were facing and can empathize. (((((HUGS))))) And thanks for letting me help you out with this tale.

Author Reply: Thanks! Meant to put it up after the challenge weekend was over, but got sidetracked. (Story of my life.)

D'y'know, I was always a labrador person, myself. This shepherd kinda slipped in under pretext of being a labrador in a shepherd suit. In the process she got under our skin. We miss her. Just today at lunch I heard the sound of food hitting the floor and then one of the kids calling her name... I'm sure we'll get used to it but it's still odd and rather chilly not having fur on my feet. (Makes me wonder just where all those hobbit stories came from, anyhow, and if they'd've been written without a doggy head on my foot.)

Author Reply: p.s. got so deep in "dog" that I forgot to say, it would have been much more difficult to write the story satisfactorily without your great assistance!

Oh, thank God. I was starting to worry about you. I almost sent you a drect e-mail this morning because I was afraid something was wrong since you hadn't posted anything in so long; so long for you that is.

I love your characterization of Fari and Goldi. Those two were meant for each other from the beginning.

And, man, what a cool dad Sam is. Most parents would have totally flipped it their child did something like those two did. I bet Pippin handled things with Fari really well, too. After all, they had worked out most of their issues by this point, and Pippin was doing his best to be a good and involved parent.

Thanks.

Connie.

Author Reply: Thanks. Have been depressed since losing my writing partner (the Alsatian always lay at my feet and twitched her ears when I'd toss a plot idea her way), and sleeping more (no dog to get me up at 5 am, to give me a couple hours of writing time before everyone else is up). Haven't been able to write at all since she left. Finally decided to revisit some old stories and post them as I'd been intending.

Am starting to get used to lack of fur on my feet.

Thanks for thinking of me. I usually announce "breaks" ahead of time. This time wasn't a break, for I usually write even when busy. Just couldn't. Was beginning to wonder if the Muse left when the dog did, but was able to put together some drabbles this morning, so we can always hope.
