Something In Common  by TopazTook 5 Review(s)

Hehehe, so cute! I always thought it interesting that Fredegar and Pippin were such good friends, when they're quite far apart in age (I assume they're good friends from the way Pippin greeted Fredegar when he was freed from the Lockholes). This was a very sweet idea for how that friendship might have changed.

Just one thing - the Bolgers lived in Budgeford, in the Eastfarthing, but believe me, I don't think you're the only one to miss that little reference :P Besides, having them live in Hobbiton worked well for the story!

- Pervinca

Author Reply: OK, I finally found the reference you're citing. In Chapter 5 of FOTR "A Conspiracy Unmasked": "Fatty Bolger....His family came from the Eastfarthing, from Budgeford in Bridgefields, in fact."
I have to say that I think this is open to interpretation in fan fic. After all, my family came from Iowa, and I still go to visit them there, but I don't live there. And you could say that Frodo's "family came from" Buckland, if you're talking about his mother, but we know he eventually lives in Hobbiton.
So, I'm going to go with Freddy's immediate family at least living in Hobbiton, because, as you say it worked well for the story ;) as well as meaning that Frodo had friends who could visit him a little more easily.
...I also did think that this story provides a little more background on the Pippin/Freddy easy repartee with the Lockholes scene. Thanks for your review, and for sending me back to hit the books again!

Yes, I hadn't thought about that they both had sisters!!! Well done and very funny.

Author Reply: Thank you -- I thought it was fun to play with the brother/sister relationships in both cases.

Great story. It is nice to see the connection between Pippin and Freddy.

Author Reply: Thanks. This was a fun one to write.

What a fun story. I love the way it carries through to their later lives, with Pippin foiling Estella once again.

Author Reply: Thank you. He's decided he has to nip this behavior in the bud, before she can start treating his Merry like she did her brother.

That was so cute! There is not a whole lot about Fredegar Bolger out there and I have read very few from when he was younger, this was wonderful! It was so cute the way Pippin and Freddy traded favors, as it where, Pippin being small enough was able to get Freddy his things back and Freddy kept Pervinca occupied so that Pippin could enjoy that party! It was cute the way they traded notes on sisters, I guess that would probably be the most the two of them would have in common! The end was adorable in Crickhollow with a grown Estella still hiding things! Thank you for sharing such a delightful story!

Author Reply: Thank you...it struck me at some point that Pippin and Freddy are the only characters among the main gentlehobbits to have sisters, and I thought it would be interesting for them to discuss that. It wasn't until I double-checked the Appendices again for this story that I realized that Pervinca and Estella are actually even the same age.
