Nice! I particularly liked Rosie in this story -- she was much as I picture her... :-)

Thanks for writing!

Love this. I can just see these two as silent partners in the ale industry! My bad, as they say, I can't remember......is the concept of silent partnerships canon or canon? It is a great idea either way?

So much happens in this, and I really don't know where to start -- but I'm glad, very glad, that Rosie had that talk with Merry, and that Merry was able to distract Pippin as they left! And that was a smart move, between the two of them, helping to get The Green Dragon opened again.

All in all, this was quite delightful.

I absolutely agree with and like the notion of Merry--and Pippin being "revisited" annually as Frodo was. Even after my first read of LOTR eons ago, I often wondered why one hobbit but not the others. After all was said and done, weren't they *all* touched by Sauron's evil first-hand in some fashion? Lovely bit about Merry and Pippin using their stipend to help out old Toby. It would be just like them to do so. Loved it all! Thanks for sharing your hobbit world. :-)

Author Reply: Certainly I think all four of them were, as you said, touched by Sauron's evil: Merry through the WK, Pippin the palantir, Sam through all he experienced at his master's side, and Frodo through many things, the Ring, the Morgul blade, Shelob's bite. None of them, of course, were traumatized as badly as Frodo. But I think all of them had enough trauma to make a difference. I believe Merry's was second to Frodo's--he was exposed to the Black Breath at least three times, and then the stabbing of the WK. At any rate, you will note that according to the Appendices *NOT ONE* of the four chose to stay and die in the Shire.

I do think that is the kind of thing the two of them would have done. They would have gotten a kick out of knowing that they secretly had a part in The Green Dragon.

Thanks so much for the review. It is always a pleasant surprise to find a review for a story that's been out for a while.

Lovely spin-off tale. So Merry and Pippin!

Author Reply: I'm glad you liked it. Merry and Pippin do have a way of impressing their personalities, don't they?

I can so see Merry and Pippin as partners in this sort of venture. Glad you posted this one. Seems the perfect use of their silver. Sam's out replanting the trees and Merry and Pippin are seeing to the thirsts of the Shire! I'll drink to that!

Author Reply: Like I said, this little idea just tried to take over Ch. 30 of Reckoning, so I just put it out by itself. I think it works, and I can see them enjoying their little secret.
