The Hours  by Thevina 2 Review(s)

An original way to portray the vastness of the peril reaching across the West of Middle-earth. Very well done! I especially like the way Denethor's deepening despair serves as bookends to the story; with his decision to destroy himself and his son ending the tale.

Author Reply: Thank you so very much! It wasn't until I began writing this that I saw just how widespread the war and havoc was during those last days of the Ring War, and how practically every culture was affected. I'm glad that you felt Denethor's presence at beginning and end brought the story to a satisfying circle.

I really enjoyed this series of vignettes. An original way to structure a story, and an interesting way to look at one point in the story when many things were happening at once. We get to look at Denethor descending in madness, with a flicker of feeling still surviving for his son; Merry struggling to get to Minas Tirith; the unknown girl burying her cousin, which was such a touching scene; and hints to what was going on far from Minas Tirith, with the surprising image of a proud Lobelia finding a way to survive the ransacking of the Shire; the burning of Lorien; and the charming yet foreboding conversation between Gloin and the raven; and then back to Minas Tirith to complete the circle. Well written, nicely done.

Author Reply: Many thanks- I believe I contacted you off list to thank you last year, but my heartfelt thanks again. I enjoyed challenging myself to the multiple effects: the monastic services, the senses, and disparate geographies and cultures. I'm so glad you felt it was effective!
