The Great Escape  by jenolas 6 Review(s)

What a lovely description of the evening in your beginning paragraph! No wonder the elves wanted some time away from the city. After all the playing and fun of the afternoon, the fact of their short time remaining on ME is really never far from their minds, it seems. Especially the three elder elves here. I always thought of the elves leaving kind of like Sam does ..."It makes me sad..." (Actually, tears are not unknown when I read about it!) I never thought about when Erestor sailed, but it makes sense he would go with Elrond and Glorfindel (who definitely needs a leash, and a keeper! LOL) This was a sad little interlude, very effective and affecting, as you wrote it in the midst of all the merrymaking. I loved Celeborn's enthusiasm about helping Legolas with Ithilien...he is certainly a forester at heart! And I loved the way the trees were excited about the Firstborn returning to them...elves and trees...*sigh*...I never get tired of reading about the way they speak to and care for each other. Now, Mithrandir to the rescue (of all stained fingers)...It seems the party is really gearing up, now that the wizard has joined them ! :D Well done!

Author Reply: Yes, I feel the Elves are looking to their future with some sadness for the world they will be leaving behind.

Mithrandir, never one to miss a good party!

Mithrandir to the rescue of dignity! I love this story - elves in their (semi) natural habitat having fun. As it should be.

Author Reply: It is fun to see the Elves enjoying themselves as one would expect. Thanks for your comments.

And there they are! Yummm indeed.

I loved this chapter with your Elder Elves. I must say, that opening paragraph was just beautiful. Such a lovely image of a soft summer night. It’s quite sad to think that while they gather to celebrate such a happy occasion, it also drives home the fact that their own days in Middle-earth are coming to an end. Glorfindel and Erestor seem to have accepted that they will leave soon and I see that Glorfindel in particular almost longs for it. It speaks volumes about how much these two love Elrond and want to offer him their support. But I thought you did a great job in showing that Celeborn is quite torn, or rather knows that he will stay but regrets the fact that it will mean separation from his wife and so many friends. Legolas’ words were so right. I’m glad the younger elf could offer some comfort to Celeborn. I do love your Celeborn (yes, even with his clothes on!) because you paint him as much more of a wood-elf than a lot of people do, which of course makes sense. I loved his delight at the thought of helping Legolas bring light back to the forests of Ithilien. It just dawned on me that these three would have known and loved Aragorn nearly all his life. And Arwen too, of course. How painful it must be for these elves to contemplate the future, no matter how happy the two lovebirds are now. And yet how lucky they are to have each other as such good friends.

LOL! I nearly couldn’t bear to keep reading when Celeborn picked up the chess pieces! I’d be so annoyed if I were him! Ah well, he doesn’t seem to mind allowing Glorfindel and Erestor a little fun at his expense. He was probably just as afraid as the others were of returning to Minas Tirith and the excitable ladies with blackberry stained hands. And of course Mithrandir turns up at the right moment with Erestor’s amazing powder. Like the elves, I don’t think I’ll even question how he does that. So yet another person joins the group. Minas Tirith seems to be emptying of visitors fairly quickly. And it sounds like they took a fair amount of wine with them too if they still have some left over. Hmmn. I’d *love* to gatecrash…;)

Author Reply: Yes, Dot, there are certainly melancholy undertones for the Elves, despite the joy of a wedding between two of their most beloved. However, it is the elder three who feel the impending changes most keenly for they have seen many more changes then the younger Elves, particularly Glorfindel of course who has already experienced death.

I am pleased you like my wood elf like portrayal of Celeborn who of course is also a great warrior and leader. In this relaxed situation he is in a very mellow mood, and willing to forgive his good friends for their little prank. (But what lies in store for the young perpetrators waiting by the stream?)

And as for Mithrandir, well he is no fool and wisely prefers to spend the evening with a carefree group of Elves intent on fun and mischief rather than an evening among the wedding planners!

Oh, I love this! Glorfindel and Erestor are still the mischievous ones, aren't they? (Glor especially)

And what a surprise! Mithrandir (which I just typed as 'Mirthandir'... Coincidence? I think not!) is never one to miss a party!

Great story, Jenolas!

Author Reply: I think Glorfindel is a firm believer in enjoying even eternal life to the full, and he delights in corrupting the normally dignified advisor into the bargain!

It's interesting to speculate on why various elves sailed when they did. I always assumed that Glorfindel would go with Elrond, but I never thought about Erestor. I suppose Celeborn would stay for the twins and Arwen, and then they all would go when Arwen died. And that's about when Legolas went too. But what about Thranduil, I wonder?

Author Reply: I also wonder about Thranduil, but it is my opinion that just as Elladan and Elrohir sailed primarily to be reunited with their healed mother and Elrond, and with elven family ties being as strong as they are (except where the heart is concerned as in Arwen's case), Thranduil would not remain separate from Legolas ( or Legolas's mother if she is still in the picture somewhere) for long.

A delightful chapter! Glorfindel and Erestor were once again a very entertaining duo. :-D

Author Reply: glad you liked it and thanks for saying so.
