All in all I truly enjoyed reading the story (devoured it in one looong setting), even if it perhaps doesn't sound so from some of my comments *g*. There are some intriguing premises and plot points, and you have executed them carefully and believably. Also your characterisations ring true, and the relationship between Merry and Pippin is depicted perfectly.

I think that sometimes important facts that have much influence in shaping the background or the plot itself are passed over only quickly or cursorily, or are only shown after the fact when their impact is diminished.

A misspelling that occured twice: it's "Pelennor Fields" correctly, not "Pellenor". Once wrote Berilac instead of Reginard (in #13. Made me wonder at first if the Thain had ended his hostility against the Brandybucks *g*). You also have several occurrences of "loose" instead of "lose".

Some of the bleak side-effects and consequences (both victims and perpetrators) of the Troubles you show are quite unusual and daring, and very sad. It was shocking to witness how low a Hobbit could sink into evilness. Maybe Tengo's deeds are even more shocking than Lotho's, because there is something so personally insidious and cruel about it.

"Enough!" Esmeralda’s thunderous shout pierced the air half an instant before she grabbed hold of an ear in each hand. Hard fingers pinched the sensitive flesh and the Thain of the Shire and the Master of Buckland found themselves half kneeling before her like a pair of errant lads.

"It is a sad day when sons are wiser than their fathers and wives must call their mates to task. Now, be civil and attend to your duties this day, and you can roll in the mud behind the barn on your own time!"

Ha! About bloody time! Go, Esmeralda!

I mourn for the fact that all innocence seems truly lost and Hobbit kills Hobbit. And even the "good guys" seem strangely unmoved.

"For every day and every night, for every year in wealth or blight, I bind my life, my heart, my soul, to make our halves forever whole." ..."As long as sun and stars may shine, I vow to treat your heart as mine, to share the joys and come what may for every night and every day..."

This is a beautiful vow! Where does that quote come from? Or did you make it up yourself?

"Do you think you honor them by forgetting how and why they died?"

Very incisive question!

I have been waiting since the first glimpse of your characterisations of Denethor that the similarities of Paladin's behaviour to Denethor's would be pointed out, and how very, very well and poignantly you finally did it! You had me crying with the first paragraph of Pippin's tale... The parallels between Faramir and Pippin are often played upon in fanfiction, but you have put this on its head here, showing the similarities between Faramir and Merry, and it worked perfectly.

What a horrible story of Posey! To see that the friendly, decent and social Hobbits cast her out without any help even after the Troubles are over made for bleak reading, especially when contrasted with events in Bag End.

Clever Pippin to just casually hand her over the baby!

I loved the paragraph beginning with The night wore on and Merry’s words poured forth, now halting, now rolling...
There was a wonderful rhythm to it; it sounded like a tale being told - which it is, of course *g*...

Again I have the feeling that the important scenes happen out of sight - I would dearly have liked to see the scene in which Odovacar so insults Merry.

Why doesn't Pippin know that his sister is dead when he returned over a year ago? Hasn't he been home at least once?

Thank you for this story. Your Pippin is neither a fool nor a child and he earns his father's respect with his honor. I also loved Estella and Merry. They were perfect. Merry's mother, Esmeralda was a delight. I got so caught up in this that I read it all in one setting and enjoyed every line. Though the death of Pervinca was very sad, it did show how much had been taken from the Shire in all of this. Also enjoyed how you showed the bond between Pippin and Merry throughout the story. This is a very excellent story.

Author Reply: Thank you very much! Yes, Pippin is no fool, even if it's easier for some to see him that way. Glad the sadder/harder parts were no deterrent to your enjoyment:) Life is tough, but that's how we find ourselves. It is ironic that someone like myself who is so fond of these people puts them through so much torture, don't you think? *grin*
