Valour Without Renown  by Forodwaith 11 Review(s)
MartaReviewed Chapter: Epilogue 2 on 1/30/2007
Here I am reading, way past my bedtime. The last chapters are, as noted, a little rougher than the earlier ones, but not so much that I found them unwieldy. I really like your OC and how she has developed; she feels very natural and I love seeing her grow up with the responsibilities she faces.

If you would like a beta, I am more than willing to beta future chapters. Let me know.

Well, she can't really put her finger on what she doesn't like about Wulfred - except he's too pretty, she's heard things about his avarice and she doesn't like the way he looks at her. He doesn't come over as a pantomime villain - just someone you'd rather have at a safe distance. Like Gondor. Or someone you would prefer to know for certain sure that the King (and his Marshals) are on your side and will avenge any liberties taken.

Maybe there's a touch of 'what were you doing in the war, Wulfred?' about her reaction to him. After all, pretty much every male (and Eowyn) that she knows were bearing arms when Rohan called - and most of those of whom she was most fond were killed. So Mr. Two-Golden-Braids doesn't get many points for staying at home combing his hair. (Of course, I'm jumping to conclusions, because I want Elfled and Elfhelm to end up together.)

I'm happy to see more of Elfled's story. (I'm hoping for a happy ending, too.) But that Wulfred bloke sounds a nasty piece of work - if she feels the need to wipe her hand after he's touched it, he must be a really slimy piece of work.

She was right to get away from Edoras - and I don't blame her for being snarky with Eowyn, who is in lurve - with all the hoppy skippy everyone should be as happy as I am connotations. Plus could do with really talking to the woman who took on her duties. But I'm glad Elfled gets invited to the wedding. Any chance of Elfhelm acting as her escort?

(Ironic that she's wary of elves, when so many of them have Elf as the start of their names.)

Author Reply: Hi, Bodkin. Glad to know you're still reading! I hope to post chapter updates at least once a month now, so look for Chapter 14 by the beginning of May.

Hmm. If Wulfred comes off as a complete slimy bastard, I may have to tone down that scene a bit. Right now he's just supposed to be someone Elfled dislikes but can't really put her finger on a good reason why.

I hadn't thought of that re: the names. It does make one wonder why the Rohirrim used that naming element so often.

you have to write more of this! Its very good, I'm also writing a fic about a woman in Rohan, but its set in the time of Helm instead. I love Rohan; there so many spaces for fics : ) you write very well and im dying to read more!

Author Reply: Thanks, Elfique - glad you're enjoying it! Rohan is one of my favourite settings for fics as well; it's such a fascinating culture.

Unfortunately, the next update won't be for a while as I'm going away on vacation. Look for it in mid-August.

PS It's also a shame she parted from Moth. The other horses didn't seem to worry her so much. It seems that when you have lost so much, you should hang on to what you have left.

Author Reply: Hi Bodkin, glad to know you're still reading & enjoying! The next update may be a while, since I'm going to be travelling for a few weeks. Look for it in mid-August.

Yes, parting from Moth was very difficult for Elfled. They may meet again however...

I'm glad there are some survivors from the Westemnet. This should give her some purpose in life - better than sitting in Edoras looking after others.

It's a shame about her mother's brooch, though. That's the sort of sacrifice that seems worth it at the time, but leads to long-held regrets.

Is there some potential between Elfhelm and Elfled, I wonder? And if Elfled means elf-fairness, then what does Elfhelm mean? Glad Moth was saved, it gives her some family.

The relentless monotony of keeping the household going - do the heroes think it happens on its own? Together with the heartbreak of loss - and actually quite a low opinion of herself. I hope she gets some breaks, and doesn't spend all her life as stand-in for Eowyn / Lothiriel.

Actually this is a very good title - not just from the viewpoint of a last stand, but because the role of women throughout warfare is one of keeping things going, managing the house and the fields and finding food and shelter with no-one to help them - only to have their role completely disregarded on the return of the heroic fighters, who then put them to one side with a kindly pat on the head, because they are only women and need someone to look after them. A very important and totally unappreciated group of people

I am enjoying this. It took me a while to start it - but I went through it in one go. I shall look forward to the updates.
