Contemplation  by Dot 5 Review(s)

You may not think you are much of a poet, Dot, but from one non-poet to another, this little effort is pretty darn good! And it is the way you convey the feelings of Legolas for his friend and brother that had me in tears! I've often tried to imagine the tearing grief he would feel at the death of Aragorn, and the part where he remembers he had stayed away rather than spend every moment possible with Aragorn was wrenching. Do you think he was in denial...that if he wasn't there to see the ravages of time taking place then maybe they wouldn't? We've just put my mom in a skilled care facility, and I know it's hard for me to watch her change. How much harder for an immortal, unchanging elf to see the dark hair silver, and the strong, supple limbs weaken to the point of falling! I cannot even begin to imagine the pain he would experience. Once again, well done!

Author Reply: Ah, I’m particularly grateful that you chose to review this. I’ve been working on another poem – although it’s completely different – and I’m having a lot of difficulty with it so your words about this were a real boost to me! I thought it is probably true of most people to think afterwards that perhaps we should have spent more time with the person we’ve lost, so can you imagine what that must be like for an elf, who would have known how much more time he had than his friend? I thought he probably was in denial – I figure it must have been fairly horrifying for him to see the changes in his friend that came with time and the easiest thing was probably to stay away. I wanted to convey the idea that not only did Legolas realise that he was doing that but Aragorn probably knew as well. Like you say, it’s very difficult to watch those we love weaken and age. I’m delighted you could feel the deep friendship between these two. If Legolas waited until Aragorn died before he sailed, then it must have been due to friendship and love.

Thanks again so very much for letting me know what you thought and for such thoughtful and in-depth comments. You made me really happy today! :-)

You may not consider yourself a poet, Dot, but this poem has touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. No prose could convey the sorrow and love Legolas felt. Beautiful work, thank you for sharing.

You startled me one day when you stumbled and fell

The grace of youth was gone – and you realised as well

Powerful, poignant, yet very understated. Its suited the occasion, and you did not overdo the Legolas-angst angle which so many others do. Very nice.

Author Reply: Thanks, Sphinx. I did want it to be understated. I had this image in my head of Legolas standing and looking down over Minas Tirith by night, just after Aragorn dies, and I just wanted to see what his thoughts would be - so it was intended to be just the feelings and memories that come to him as he stands there rather than a whole angsty piece. I'm glad you liked it:)
