Aw, this was lovely. :D And very cat-like. ;) Although I wish you had given the poor (purr) cat a name...

Interesting POV - the Council of Elrond as seen by a cat ;). I like how the cat considers Elrond to be her elf!

Author Reply: Whoops - I'm a bit late on replying to some reviews!

Cats are independent creatures, and I can just see them regarding the elves as their servants!

I so enjoy your drabbles, Jay, but I think this one is my absolute favorite.

I love how you capture the essence of the events at the Council of Elrond from the cat's perspective... "her elf" leading it, the Dwarven voices, the inconsequential but endless discussion, Gandalf's use of the Black Speech, Elrond reproving him, no one volunteering to take the Ring, then Frodo stepping in.

I especially liked Suddenly she awoke with a start and hissed, her fur standing on end in fear. ... The sunlight faded, and a sense of evil hung in the air. Cats are acutely attuned to such currents of danger, I think, and you show that so well.

And a heavy, ringing silence. Wow! that is so profound, Jay! Not just because the description is so evocative, but the double-entendre about the ring.... That kind of writing is what separates good drabbles from great ones.

This drabble is a sparkling gem of feline wisdom. I almost feel like I'm profaning it by speaking of individual parts, when the whole is so perfectly crafted....

Beautifully done!

I love this! I love animal POV's and this was perfect! The cat's elf! Great! And all those annoying unimportant affairs disturbing the kitty's lovely sunshine. I can so see this. Wonderful!

Author Reply: Well, one thing's for sure - she's not Elrond's cat, it's definitely the other way round! And what could be more important than sleeping in the sun?

I've been on the receiving end of the one-eyed glare when I disturb my cat by doing pointless, irritating things like typing when she's on my lap!

Personally, I think it is in Mirkwood during the visits of the burglar and the Dwarves in "The Hobbit"... because Thranduil most decidedly seems to me to be an Elf who would love cats. :-) Dearly as I love dogs, I think them a tad over-eager; Elves would appreciate the aloof loyalty of the fabled Cat. :-)

Wherever it is and whoever the kitty's Elf is, it is an adorable drabble. Thank you for sharing it!

Author Reply: Actually, it's the Council of Elrond - pretty pointless, wouldn't you agree? ;) Elrond, of course, is the cat's elf; and the cat, needless to say, is based on mine.

I hadn't thought about it being Mirkwood, but that fits as well. I think Thranduil is more of a dog person, though (though not the floppy, soppy, loves-everyone creature we have, drooling lovingly on the cat!)

As a cat lover, I say hear hear Jay! Kitty musta been just behind Elrond's chair. I loved this story! :D

Author Reply: Yes, I think the cat would have stayed close to her elf! I'm glad you liked this - it's a piece of silliness that was great fun to write.

I like this one very much, Jay! Having a house full of such persnickety creatures, I can very much identify with it. :-) You captured kitty perspective perfectly!

Author Reply: I expect most cat lovers will identify with this! Cats have a different view on matters - never mind saving the world, a bit of peace and quiet and a warm spot is all they want.

"The pointless, irritating discussions were over."

Lol, I love this one. Being a cat person myself, I think it suits the personlity of a cat perfectly. Good job =)

Author Reply: All those talks about the future of the world - why can't they just let a cat sleep in peace?

I certainly had my cat in mind as I wrote this - and she's on my lap now, wishing I'd stop typing!

It's the Council of Elrond?

Somehow, I didn't think of that. I thought that this was Mirkwood, and the harsh voices were visiting dwarves.

But on second thought, Thranduil doesn't seem like a cat person.

Author Reply: I hadn't thought about Mirkwood, but it was dwarves - Gimli and Gloin were at the council.

Thranduil may be more of a dog person, perhaps.

OK. I had to think about this. The Council, right? I like the POV, Jay. It's always touching to me how animals just go on with their animal lives when what we think are huge doings are going on.

Author Reply: Yes, it's the council. I deliberately didn't specify, but hadn't realised that it could be taken as Mirkwood as well.

I think animals (especially cats) have different priorities to us!
