I've always wondered how the Orcs got close enough to Thranduil's stronghold to set Gollum free. Your account is as good as any I can think of at the moment. It's easy to see how Gollum might have escaped in the confusion of battle. The Elves were certainly taken by surprise.

I had always wondered the exact same thing, because you would think that loud and disorganized Orcs could hardly stand a chance against the Elves, in the Elven stronghold. I thought that this way, with the confusion of the unexpected Orc attack, Gollum's escape might seem more plausible. |
