I loved this story! So sad, though. Very well done.

:tears:
Poor Merry...very likely he could have lost a little brother. This was lovely, dear, and so sad.

Author Reply: The plot bunny was 'borrowed' from Shirebound and Baylor. All credit goes to them. *Hands over tissue* Thank you for the lovely review Kim : - )

This is a very sweet story, particularly in the way that Frodo explains death to Merry, using the example of a pet mouse who "started sleeping forever." The description of the room was lovely. It seemed right for the story that only Frodo and Merry be in there with the baby, although I would have expected him either to be laid out in a coffin or, if he were still in a cradle, to be in a bedroom with Esme (who probably wouldn't be up and running so soon after a stillbirth). But the narrow focus of the setting did work well for bringing out the tone of the story. Nice work also on taking up the theme of anniversaries so prevalent in Tolkien's work.

I think that I would have liked a little more background for the opening scene, though. Just enough to set a scene.

*particularly in the way that Frodo explains death to Merry

I think I spent about half an hour figuring out how you would explain death to a four year old, not having had any experience myself. Glad to hear that it worked okay.

**to be in a bedroom with Esme (who probably wouldn't be up and running so soon after a stillbirth)

I did take a few liberties with Esme's condition, sorry about that, I just wasn't sure how I would work her and Saradoc into the story (I'm lazy ^_^ ) as I wanted it to be primarily Merry and Frodo. Maybe she was in a wheelchair.

***taking up the theme of anniversaries so prevalent in Tolkien's work.

I think just about everyone has an anniversary of some sort now, except Sam (well, he has his wedding anniversary I suppose) *LOL* to be honest, I didn't consider the aniversary connection until you mentioned it in your review. Wow, that's cool.

****I think that I would have liked a little more background for the opening scene, though. Just enough to set a scene.

The first scene was set a couple of weeks after Bywater (in the bookverse) when Merry and Pip are still emptying the Shire of ruffians. (I'm Lazy ^_^) Sorry, I'll remember your advice for next time.

Thanks for the review French Pony, especially the advice.

A lovely sad story. It made me cry.

One suggestion: there are many who will not understand the title; you might want to add a note.
