What a charming story. i like the relationship you show between Merry and Eowyn. Merry tries to be so independent, but he's in such a new and unknown environment that it's nearly impossible. How sweet for Eowyn to tend to him, even though they barely know each other, really. Of course they've been on the same horse for days, so that makes people close! Her practicality is endearing as well, which was something Merry could apparently udnerstand, so that he even put on shoes (what a thought!). Their relationship afterward was interesting, it seemed they had to learn to relate in a differnet way. The smoking scene was quite charming. It seems women didn't smoke in Tolkien's world, but if some did, I'm quite sure Eowyn would be one of them. On occasion, at least. ;-)
The description of the Rohirrim's belief of what happens after they die was lovely, and I love what you did with it. The closing of the story was just beautiful.

Oh, how I love Merry/Eowyn stories...wait, that makes them sound like romance! I love stories about the deep friendship between Merry and Eowyn - sound better? This was several stories in one - each of them as fantastic as each other. Thank you for sharing this delightful piece!

Author Reply: No, thank you for reading it and enjoying it! :)

The Merry/Eowyn friendship fascinates me (which is probably obvious), and the details of that trip from Edoras to Gondor especially since Tolkien didn't give any that hint about their relationship. But it must have been one of very strong, mutually-accepted (though never discussed!) deceit. Which must have really shaken Merry once Eowyn was revealed as such (which is sortof explicated in LotR), but I imagine they would have a lot to say, or quiet time to just "be" once they were in the Houses of Healing.

(stops rambling)

I'm glad that you liked it. It's a complicated relationship, but one which I trust lasted their entire lives.

Hey!! I liked your story.. i finished re-reading ROTK this morning, and your stories makes perfect sense, of course they would share a special friendship :)

Author Reply: Many thanks! I just have to believe that they would have kept up and shared quite a tight bond after all they went through, all those days of riding... Glad that you enjoyed the story.

This was truly lovely. I enjoyed it so much. You delved into their characters beautifully. I have always loved the bond of Merry and Ewoyn. I loved the part about the shoes, that socks, and Windfola. :) Poor horsie...

Thank you for writing this.
