| I am so glad that Shadowfax will only be needed by Gandalf after he has safely escorted Bill to The Prancing Pony; I was hoping that would be the case! This way, Bill will make it there in one piece. Of course, you're right that the story won't be over at that point; it can't end until Bill has been reunited with Sam! =) It'll be interesting to see how the story proceeds during those months between Bill's arrival at the inn and the hobbits' and Gandalf's own arrival there. Author Reply: I'm glad to hear you're reassured on that point. Of course, we have Tolkien's word for it that Bill arrives in one piece, albeit "lean" and "shaggy". The gap-filler that occurred to me to account for Bill's time in Bree, waiting for Sam, makes me smile, so I hope it will cheer you as well. I didn't want to write his arrival in his stall at The Prancing Pony and then abruptly begin the next chapter by describing Bill's reunion with Sam ten or so months later! The thought was jarring, somehow. Thanks again for reading and pausing long enough to share your thoughts! | |

| Good results can occur after apparent difficulties. I understand thoroughly. Author Reply: Definitely. I suppose that "Every cloud has a silver lining" has a similar context. (I think "context" is the right word... my brain is mush, a lively discussion is taking place in the kitchen just a few steps away from where I'm typing, the cat-with-the-peacock-voice is intermittently chiming in, and I cannot think straight. However, it is delightful to have human companionship again, so I'm not complaining. "background"? "underlying meaning"? "connotation"?) Thanks! | |

| So long as neither wolves nor rogue men plague Bill or Shadowfax, that's the important thing! Author Reply: Definitely! A little more difficulty between here and Bree, but it won't be long before Bill is safe with Butterbur (and Nob and Bob). Of course, the story won't be quite over at that point... Thanks! | |

| Yes, it will be very fitting if the wolves and the rogue Men "take care" of each other, one way or the other. One less thing for Bill and Shadowfax to worry about. Author Reply: That would be quite a satisfying solution, all told. You might even say they deserve each other. I'm happy to say that Bree is just ahead, though our intrepid travellers intend to go around rather than through the town at this point. Thanks! | |

| I enjoyed this explanation as much as Pippin! Youngest slapped my Sam on the back and joined him in laughing, such a lovely, light moment that it stays in my mind while some of the darker moments grow blessedly dim. What a sweet and healing memory. Author Reply: I have been enjoying loitering with hobbits too much, I fear. My self-indulgence has slowed down the flow of the story, so I need to set my teeth or gird my loins or whatever the proper expression is and just get on with things! But I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Bilbo's explanation, as recounted by Sam, along with Bill's pleasant memories of his hobbits. | |
