And so Bill has evolved into a new sense of self -- as a comforting, deeply thinking, insightful companion. He's learned great lessons through his travels and friends and is becoming a mighty being in his own right. Author Reply: I keep remembering Sam's observation about Bill, coming on the heels of the description that The stay in Rivendell had worked a great wonder of change on him: he was glossy and seemed to have the vigour of youth... ‘That animal can nearly talk,’ he said, ‘and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He had changed so much by the time the Fellowship set out from Rivendell... I can only imagine that his growth and transformation continued, travelling as he was in the company of a wizard, as well as his other companions.
