A passing use of a common aphorism by Pippin becomes the trigger for a confusing conversation amongst the four Hobbits, leading Strider to laugh and yet not explain the confusion. A good idea to contemplate as he travels west toward home. Author Reply: I was also thinking of Merry's 'We are horribly afraid – but we are coming with you; or following you like hounds.' That's definitely a thought worth contemplating! Thanks so much for reading and pausing to share your thoughts! I am devoting tomorrow (Saturday) to fanfic-reading. What fun!

No one seems to realize that Pippin didn't actually say there WAS a dog following them. He said it was LIKE a dog. Maybe Aragorn gets it, but he's not telling. Curiouser and Curiouser. Author Reply: Bingo. You got it. Pippin saw the Road winding along in the same direction as the Travellers, and his brain made the connection to a dog following behind. Rather like Lop, the sheepdog and his frequent companion in his earlier years, who followed him everywhere and, when scolded, followed him anyhow but kept out of sight to avoid more scolding. Whew! For a moment, I thought poor Bill was going to get drunk. Thanks for not inflicting that on our sweet pony!! And with that said, now you've made me curious, and that's not fair!!! [stamps foot] What dog??? Where did Pippin get the idea that a dog was following them, anyway? Do tell! =) Author Reply: Bill probably has no idea of what "hair of the dog" means, though no doubt he's heard various people say the phrase. Since there never seems to be a dog around when someone says it, it's quite possible that he thinks it's a saying used to refer to a dog that was around but has gone away, leaving only some hair behind. (I can relate to that. Our Labradors and Alsatian and Blue Heeler mix all left hair behind constantly!) Pippin confused Bill (who was listening fairly carefully but not following the discussion well, considering he'd only been with them for two days or so at that point), as well as his older cousins (who were only half-listening to him, as is so typical of older cousins and older siblings). Thus, only Aragorn (who pays close attention to everything around him, at least in my mind's eye) realized that Pippin was talking about the Road on the map he'd sketched in the dust (comparing it to a dog, that is) and not a real dog. For an added layer to the anecdote and his cousins' reactions, in my head canon (I think that's what it's called?), Pippin easily makes friends with dogs, and during his tween years before this point in time, when he was allowed to wander by himself, dogs often followed him home. Bill's thoughts are fun to follow. He certainly has enough memories to keep him distracted and entertained. Author Reply: I have to think that his thoughts constantly went back to his hobbits, and that they were the motivating force behind his determination to keep going in hopes of finding them in the end. Thanks for reading and taking the time to share your thoughts. (((hugs)))
