Yet another war of words that Pippin seems to have lost before he knew he was fighting it! But his opponents all knew their minds and their goal…. And it is convenient to have an escort already in the works - makes it harder for him to say know even if he could figure out what was going on….

Happy to get back to this story! July was so busy, it’s nice to be able to settle a bit again.

Author Reply: Alas, poor Pippin. He's so used to being the one to talk in circles around others, confusing them into agreeing with him. It is all the more difficult when everyone else is presenting a united front and engaged in a benevolent conspiracy! (But he really is in need of a rest, as his difficulty in "fighting back" shows, so it's all to the good.)

I'm glad to hear from you! It certainly does feel good to settle again, even briefly, after a busy time. My problem is that I've been resting so much this past month, the cats have decided that resting is the preferable state of affairs. Now that I'm using the laptop again, they are in rebellion – meowing, racing through the house at top speed and making a thunder of their paws, and cruising by my ankles like small, furry sharks. That last part always makes me jump because one of the three cats occasionally used to bite the tendon at the side of my knee when I spent long hours at the laptop editing. Thus, when I feel a cat brush against my leg, I'm always expecting a bite. It's quite distracting!

Lin!

"At last, opening his eyes, Pippin said, 'Sam, please tell me what you know about the King's escort.'

'They're a group of elite Guardsmen,' Sam began helpfully, 'tasked by Strider, which is the reason for the name "King's escort"...'"

LOL! right up there with Airplane's "A Hospital? Doctor, what is it?" "A big building with sick people in it...but that's not important right now!"

Yeah! Pippin finally bows to the inevitable! About bloody time, as he clearly needs a holiday if he can't keep track of a simple conversation!! :-) Sam, the master of getting things done! LOL! Nice trick of his getting the King's Escort there!

thanks!

Author Reply: MM!

Oh! I hadn't thought of that similarity! Remembering that bit from Airplane! just now made me laugh.

Our family has a habit of quoting from movies. One of the quotes from that particular movie that has often been heard around here is the air traffic controller's "Looks like I picked the wrong week to give up (fill in the blank)..." and his paranoid "No! That's just what they'll be expecting us to do!"

And you're exactly right. Pippin's inability to follow the conversation is a definite sign of his need for some rest and recuperation.

Did you read Yew by Pearl Took? Do you have any ideas for it? Are you going to write the drabble, actually, a story, that I asked about?

I love how Sam and Merry and Estella and Diamond all trick Pippin in going to Gondor. Poor Pippin is left delightfully confounded! He never stood a chance against all of them banded together!

In the story "All that Glisters", in chapter 53, Hilly says, "And you know what they say about Brandybucks!"

I've been wondering and wondering. What do they say about Brandybucks? I keep on reading that phrase and I still can't figure out what they say about Brandybucks.

Author Reply: I did! I even saw from the reviews that I started reading the story years ago (before the need to go back to the workplace pulled me away from fanfic), and I revisited it after your earlier request. It is a clever, creative story! That said, no ideas have arisen in my brain for a related story, at least not yet. Sometimes the ideas flow, and sometimes they refuse to budge. (For example, it took me about 15 years to come up with the epilogue to Pearl of Great Price after a reader asked me if there might be any way to save Lop the sheepdog instead of him dying to save Pippin's life. And though I asked Marigold many times for a story prompt for one of her challenges in the old days, not all of them resulted in a story, much as I wished to come up with something.) I will keep your request in mind, but I cannot make any promises.

Hobbit conspiracies can be very effective!

The joke about the Brandybucks is one of those things that is so old and so generally well-known in the Shire as to go without saying (and so rude, apparently, that people don't say it in polite company) that many of the people who bring up the "old saying" have actually forgotten what it is. Sort of like forgetting the punch line to an iconic joke.

Thanks so much for reading and pausing to share your thoughts!
