All Work and No Play  by Lindelea 1 Review(s)

Three days later! Haldoron may have thought himself wanting compared with others with more of the healing gift, but his will and effort proved more than enough. And yet another testament to the resilience of hobbits, like Merry of old, Ferdi was up and around the next day. Staying at the outpost seems to be giving the young Hobbits a chance to work with the young Rangers, as well as having Hal and Ferdi learn to work together. This trip is having even more benefits than first planned. I can relate to Taurion's and Hal's perception that "the new recruits are getting younger". I work at a chain restaurant, which advertises itself as being 'America's favorite first job'. I am in the latter half of my third decade working there. Most of the rest of the crew have not LIVED close to three decades!

Author Reply: It's funny how time works. I don't feel all that older, but the people I encounter when I'm out and about keep looking younger...

I love the thought JRRT put into the way the described Hobbits versus Men, like their rate of recovery, intake of food, even the developmental differences in terms of their ages. It's always interesting (for me, at least!) to contemplate such comparisons, which is an added benefit of writing a Man-travels-with-Hobbits story, I guess.

I like to think Haldoron's effort to save him from the recurrence of the Black Breath made a deeper impression on Ferdi than Ferdi lets on here – at least at this point in their relationship. That said, the draft contains a scene in Gondor where the two of them are drinking together and have something of a heart-to-heart talk. (I don't know yet if it will be in the finished version. We'll see.)

It's good to hear from you! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts. Stay well! (((hugs)))
