A very powerful piece. Very powerful. Tolkien (to the extent that I've read him) never goes into much depth about how Oropher gained the trust of the Sinda and made Eryn Lasgalen into his realm. Nor does he ever mention the name of Oropher's wife, to my knowledge. And it's great how Thranduil's life was what Oropher valued above his own, in the end. It's a very deep piece, as I have mentioned, one that has a good look into Oropher's life.

Very glad you wrote this. Very glad.

No, there really is very little on him, a few pages in Unfinished Tales is about it! So I used that as a jumping off point to write this. My intent was to explore the reasons behind the decisions he made. I'm pleased you liked his feelings towards Thranduil... I don't think he charged early because he was arrogant and I wanted to look at other explainations.

I'm glad you liked it... I enjoyed getting into his head for a little while too!

This is great. I hope it is a sign that you intend to write more about Oropher. Too little is done on him. I completely agree with you on his motivations to move east and I thought it was very interesting that you have him married to a Silvan elf. I liked the idea that their bonding sealed his relationship with the Silvan. And I really liked you explanation for why he led the early charge--wish I had thought of that myself! I personally do not believe Oropher would just do something stupid/arrogant that would result in the death of so many, so I really liked that touch. And the ending was sad but hopeful.

I really hope you write more on this.

Having him marry a Silvan Elf just seemed natural to me and I feel, answered the question of why the Silvan Elves agreed to take a Sindarin Lord.

The reason behind the charge was the main reason for writing this story. It has always irritated me that because of his dislike for the Noldor, Oropher is often seen as arrogant and a bad leader. I felt that there had to have been a better reason behind his actions. After all, even Tolkien called him wise!

I don’t have any more Oropher fics planned right now, but who knows what ideas I’ll get in the future!
If you haven’t already though, you should read ‘Some Years Ago in Greenwood’ by Luineithel. (On this site) She’s the one this story was written for and the person responsible for getting me interested in Oropher! It’s a really beautiful story, well worth your time!

I *like* this! Stories from Oropher's POV are rare. The idea that his mad rush at the Black Gate was to distract the enemy and protect Thranduil - I loved it! I'm glad he knows that his beloved son has a son of his own who is equally cherished.

Explaining why he charged early was the main reason for writing this. He may not have liked the Noldor, but I'm sure he wouldn't have endangered his people just because of that. Love of his son seemed much more reasonable!

I know I already reviewed this on another site, but it bears reviewing again. I really loved this. Actually, it falls into the catagory of 'Damn, I wish I'd thought of that!', LOL. I especially liked the part about Oropher's reason for charging ahead of Gil-Galad's signal. Well done!

Heehee, thanks! It's always an ego-boost to get that kind of reaction!

As I said to the others, the reason behind his charge was largely why I wrote this story. After all, he was a great and wise king, it didn't make sense that he'd do what he did without a good reason.
