“Paladin has been softened in this revision from a totally unreasonable, harsh and demanding, critical father to bring him more in line with the character as he is written in Pearl of Great Price and Thain. He might be better described in terms of the harried Thain, driven by the demands of the Tooks surrounding him and wanting the best for his son but having no idea how to properly prepare Pippin to follow in his footsteps as Thain since he received no such preparation himself. Thus, he is closer to the contented farmer in The Farmer's Son and less like Denethor as Pippin encountered him which, in hindsight, affected my characterisation of Pippin's father. (Along similar lines, I suspect the kindly Théoden affected how I characterised Merry's relationship with his father. It's interesting how small hints can grow into large gapfillers...) And for all I know, I got the relationships and characterisations wrong and Tolkien had a completely different idea of who these barely-mentioned characters should be.” Oh. yes. Faramir Took! Farry-lad! And yes, it is funny about Merry and Pippin-lad. Author Reply: I hope my explanation makes sense. It's been a challenge. (And yes, it was fun to imagine Sam thinking that Pippin followed Merry everywhere in their earlier days, and so it made perfect sense that Pippin Gamgee came after Merry Gamgee in birth order.) Lin! "She sighed, and Pippin looked up with a smile, some of the old impishness showing in his eyes." Yeah!!! happy to read this!! I am going to have to re-read some of the stories you have mentioned! Thanks! (((hugs))) MM Author Reply: MM! I am way behind in replying to reviews, but I will be plugging away at it now that I'm beginning to get my energy back. I don't want anyone to think I take reviews for granted! I find them so encouraging to read. (Staying up past 1am is probably not the best course of action in terms of getting things done and continuing to recuperate, and I plan to do better after today. But this is the first day I haven't felt the need to take three naps and go to bed relatively early! Though with editing draft chapters into final form and reading fanfic, it is possible that three naps will again be on the agenda for the coming day...) I'm so glad you made it through the angst to happier times! It's always such a relief to get to the joy after the struggle, whew. (((hugs))) my friend. I'm so excited to hear that your new chapter is coming along! Warmly, Lin

What a fun chapter, with the visitors and the birth of baby Faramir. Fatherhood will be good for Pippin! And I loved the conversation between Sam and Merry at the end. It always seemed odd that Sam would agree to be mayor, he’s so humble - it makes complete sense that perhaps it had some to do with Frodo’s wishes. And of course that little thought taking root that just maybe he’ll see Frodo again someday… Lovely chapter, thx for writing! Author Reply: Thank you! Somehow I couldn't quite imagine Sam going for Mayor as his own idea, so I envisioned a few gentlehobbits (Freddy Bolger and the other three Travellers, mostly) working on him to consider the idea in various stories. I appreciate your reading and taking time to share your thoughts!
