Both Merry and Pippin helped save the twins, at least. And now there is the unspoken agreement betwixt Pip and Diamond. The marriage that didn't--a lasting grief for all. Author Reply: It was heart-breaking to write of two losses. It's fairly subtle, but both Pippin and Merry remembered Ruby in naming daughters in their own families. For Pippin and Diamond, Forget-me-not's "love name" is Ruby. For Merry and Estella, they give their daughter an Elvish name that (someone told me) means "a red jewel that shines with starry fire". Pippin has an understanding with Diamond's parents that if things work out, they know where he stands, and he knows they won't stand in his way if things work out as he hopes. At this point in time, Pippin's not even of age yet. Diamond is (five?) years younger. Marriage, if it should happen, is still years away by typical Shire custom. (I think I read somewhere that male hobbits usually marry around the age of 40, while female hobbits typically marry around the time they come of age or as early as age 30. Lobelia was almost scandalously young when she married Lotho, 26 I think? I don't know if that comes out of something JRRT wrote or if I got it from fanfic; alternatively, I might have come up with some sort of understanding by studying the birthdates and marriages on the family trees. Anyhow, that's how it works in my stories.) Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to leave so many thoughtful reviews!

Lindelea! "Ribbons still hung from the lank manes and trailed from the tails spread out in the gently lapping water." Tragically sad image. ouch. It had been so happy. "'Ah, Snip,' the farmer said softly. 'Ye did your best, my lass. You always did your best.' Suddenly he covered his face and began to sob. 'My lass,' he said brokenly, 'My poor, poor lass.'" Sometimes we need to talk around our pain because it is too great. "His son's arms encompassed him, and Merry whispered, 'I'm harder to lose than you think...' Together they wept." * Sob * (((hugs))) MM Author Reply: MM! This chapter made me very sad, but I wrote it anyhow because I'd grown so fond of the characters, I wanted to do them justice, somehow. Your insight regarding talking around our pain brought to mind Merry, talking to Pippin in the Houses of Healing, and Aragorn's (probably carefully considered) interaction with him after his healing. I hadn't quite seen that scene in just that way before, so thank you for the added food for thought! Though there's some angst and stress in upcoming chapters, this present sorrow will become tempered by the passing of time. Also, happier times will come along, reflecting the rollercoaster of life, so to speak... I'm starting to ramble, so I think I'd better leave the laptop in peace and go seek out some protein. Thanks again for your thoughtful reviews! I appreciate hearing your thoughts. (((hugs))) Lin

THat scene with Saradoc and Merry hugging was so heartfelt and touching- i liked how you wrote their relationship in this story esp. how they needed to catch up post Quest. Such a sad time for all to grief for the hobbits that were lost (esp. Merry's finance!... ) Author Reply: It's a very sad time, but the love of Merry's family will help him get through. Thanks for your thoughts!

Ah… I hope Pippin and Diamond’s new thing doesn’t just make things worse for poor Merry … Author Reply: I think that Merry loves Pippin so much, he'd never allow himself to mar his younger cousin's happiness. And Pippin understands, somehow, that if he doesn't live life to the fullest, Merry will only blame himself for raining on his parade – and Pippin certainly doesn't want that! Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. Sorry about these belated replies.

I've been dreading these past few chapters, whilst being sure they must come, and you have written them so well that this one, in particular, brought tears to my eyes. Author Reply: Yes, it was difficult to write, knowing that Merry does not end up married to Ruby and there had to be a plausible reason for it. I think, though, that when Merry-and-Estella finally comes about, he'll treasure Estella all the more for knowing how unpredictable life can be.

I've played catch-up and not left reviews at every chapter. Well, well written. You did a wonderful job of enough sorrow to hurt the heart but not so much as to have us feel crushed by it. It is sad that such things do happen, we never know what plans that we've made will be missed. MEWD on all of these chapters! Author Reply: Hullo, Pearl! The little ones are sleeping in this a.m., and so I am stealing some time from the needs of the day to answer reviews, and hopefully leave a few! (Read the latest chapter of your and Golden's story yesterday but got interrupted in reviewing.) It is always nice to hear from you, even if you are playing catch-up! I used to try to leave a review after every chapter I read, but lately I only do that when reading each-chapter-as-it's-posted, and on stories with lots of chapters already posted when I start my reading, it's a little more hit-or-miss. (It used to be much easier when the little ones took a daily nap and I had more time for reading and writing!) There is sorrow in life, but there is also joy, and the two tend to alternate... I have tried to write "real" as much as possible, over the years, and while sometimes I have to contrive a bit to get a satisfying ending, I still hope that the stories reflect real life, and real issues. It is always an honour to receive one of your MEWD pats on the back.

The healing is begun, and Diamond and Pippin prepare for the day they will themselves marry. The poor North-Tooks; and love Saradoc's intent to do what he can, even if it is but to comfort--although that was needed most! Author Reply: Yes, or at least Pippin does. Diamond is not yet old enough for more than sisterly love... but Pippin is willing to wait. I don't remember where that idea came from, originally, but it was some novel or other. Little Women, perhaps? Or maybe Anne of Green Gables? Not sure. Sometimes comfort is all we can offer, and it never seems enough, even then. Thanks!
