Review part two!

'Dernhelm was Eowyn,' Merry spoke, so low that they had to strain to hear him. 'She was so fair, so desperate. It would have been wrong to let her die there alone.'"

Yes it would have! BTW, in my story Merry will know it is Eowyn that he rides with it will give me nice story opportunities.

"Meriadoc's family encircled him, enveloped him, and held him for a long time, long after the tea in the cosied pot grew cold."

Again *weep*

Wonderful chapter, my dear!

Oh! I'm so looking forward to reading that part of your story! While I remember film-Merry suddenly realising he's riding with Éowyn (I can see his bright expression and hear his enthusiastic "My Lady!" clearly in my mind), I don't remember how or when it was in the book that he knew Dernhelm was Éowyn. Oh well, yet another good excuse for a re-read, it seems.

I love how fanfic tends to show such deep love between hobbits. Tolkien hinted at it, but of course he was also quite occupied with telling his epic tale...

Thank you so much for reading and taking time to share your thoughts.

Lindelea!

Finally a little time! Just finished a three-day craft show with my jewelry and I am exhausted. Have another show in two weeks but I am taking a few days off from jewelry-making so I can read!!!

"He went over every word of the parley at Isengard, then had his son go over it again. He shook his head. 'Hard to believe that he would come to ruin the Shire out of spite. That is a small thing for a great one to do.'"

True. Just shows how small "Sharkey" had become. Small and petty cruelty was all that was left to him.

"Pippin was silent and withdrawn as Merry told of the stones of seeing. He'd not a single word to put in. Not like the lad at all.

Saradoc mused that not all wounds left scars that you could see."

So very true.

"Pippin touched his shoulder, gently.

'Merry?'

They all waited.

'Merry? Do you want me to tell it?'"

Lovely deft touch here. Showing Pippin's gentle touch and quiet compassion for his friend, knowing his pain. Lovely.

"Suddenly the young Brandybuck took a great, sobbing breath, and another, and then Pippin caught him as he crumpled. Saradoc half rose from his seat in alarm, but the healer waved him back, watching intently.

The dam burst, and the son of the Master began to weep, great wrenching sobs that shook his frame as Pippin held him. "

*Weep* So much repressed emotion breaking through.

I think I may have reviewed this chapter already but no matter! It is good enough to review twice!! Must dash to work!

So lovely to hear from you! I'm glad life has given you some reading time. (Might I hope for some writing time, as well? No pressure from me, of course. I remember so well how difficult it was – and often impossible – to carve any writing time, much less energy, out of my work schedule.)

I hope this reply finds you and yours well. You're right, this part of the story, where the Travellers are recounting their stories, is a really difficult part. I often thought of my father and uncles who fought in WWII while I was writing this part, and I had a hard time deciding whether Merry and Pippin would tell Merry's parents anything at all about their travels. My dad only told funny stories about his time in Europe with a bomber division. I do know that he was the only one of his classmates to serve in Europe; all of the others were sent to the Pacific theater, and only one of them survived. One of my uncles never spoke about the war at all, and another uncle (who was a medic in the Battle of the Bulge) did not speak a single word – he didn't just avoid the topic of war but was voluntarily mute (my heart breaks for him) – for six months after he returned from the war, according to my parents' reminiscences.

Love that they’re getting some comfort here - that they feel safe enough to tell all.

Author Reply: I've always seen Saradoc and Esmeralda as "safe" people, somehow. Perhaps the impression simply grew from the adult that their son Merry had grown into before the Quest began?

Thanks!

My arm turned to ice as my sword turned to fire and burned all away. Shadow fell upon me and I lost myself...'

What a powerful description in less than two sentences! Fantastic Lindelea!

And I just adored the ending of this chapter. 'It is the way of hobbits to speak lightly.....etc!

Author Reply: Thanks!

(Hobbits. Just can't get enough of them.)

Yes, trolls killed--apply to Peregrin Took, Crickhollow or Great Smials, the Shire....

Glad to see the family find out, and for Merry and Pippin to see the tale told at the last, and the grief for Frodo and what he bore.

Author Reply: I can almost see the advertisement, can't you?
